When I was little we lived in Liberia West Africa and Halloween was coming up. We were way too far from any store so my dad made me a mask for Frankenstein. He molded the shape from plain old dirt from the garden. Then the old style paper mache with strips of newspaper. I was impressed and won second prize. You have just started me on a whole new journey. I'm so very excited. Thank you.

Great video! Would this method work on a sculpture with more details? I have a very detailed sculpt that I want to try this method on. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@UltimatePaperMache2 жыл бұрын
If there are a lot of undercuts on your sculpture, the dried paper mache could damage the sculpture when it's pulled off the wet clay. And the plastic, plus the paper mache, will tend to smooth out any really small details. The ideal thing would be to make a silicone mold and then use that for your paper mache copy. It does cost more, but you won't lose any details. I have a video that shows how to do that. But even with a silicone mold, the paper mache will not capture really small details. It will come very close, though. You can see that video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJbZnqxtZcdnpdE

Thank you so much for sharing this Elmer powder glue. I have a question, can I use this glue when I make my coffee table bowl, out of newspaper and use this glue you show us? Well my bowl be hard when it’s dry? Also after it’s dry, do I add the (clear gesso) when it’s completely dry, can I paint it? Thank you, I really love your video….🙋♀️

Where to get the bust you’re sculpting on? Or suggest something else that can be used?

The one I have doesn't seem to be available right now, but you can find similar ones here: amzn.to/3ULpjZ9 And I just now finished a pattern for a very simple mannequin head, that you could use for this type of sculpture. You can find the new video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3LFnYGKha-Ad8k

Did you brush the plastic wrap that you put over the mask as a barrier all over with a brush 1st before putting the paper on? Or do you just brush small sections of the plastic wrap as you go along? and also wet the paper as you apply it... thank you.
@UltimatePaperMache2 жыл бұрын
I put it on over the wet clay, and then moistened any plastic that didn't want to stick when it was folded over. The paper is wet because it's dipped in the paste.

Does flour+water mold? Any issues?
@UltimatePaperMache4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will mold if you don't dry it fast enough. The Art Paste used in this video won't mold, but flour and water does, if it stays wet.

Jonni its possible to make a bust out of paper mache? How to make a pattern out of this?
@UltimatePaperMache6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can make a bust, but you'd probably want to create an armature for it instead of using a mannequin like I did in this video. That way you could leave the armature inside and you wouldn't have to cut the paper mache apart and stick it back together. That would actually be a fun project - I'll put it on my list! :)

Would masking fluid work instead of the plastic?
@UltimatePaperMache6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I don't know. You wouldn't need the plastic if you use oil-based clay, but if you use wet clay you'll need to keep it wet so it's easy to get out of the paper mache - but you have to isolate it so the water in the clay doesn't keep the paper mache wet. Plastic is the easiest way to do it.

I think it's funny how she uses 4 layers of news/mystery paper that looks fairly solid, but when I tried to make a simple smooth faced mask out of printer paper I had to use 12-15 layers. It was super solid, but I had trouble smoothing out the edges of the strips I used and tried to use several layers of dry wall joint compound (It wasn't as round as I liked, so I kept adding(not easy) till I got it close enough).
@ignisking7595 жыл бұрын
What's your opinion on monster clay? I have this plastilina modeling clay I bought 5 lbs of from Michaels (super cheap when on sale), and I'm unsure if all wax/oil based clay is meant to be this difficult to work with or not. I know WED clay isn't wax/oil, but I just wanted to see if you knew of an alternative like it as opposed to someone having to keep buying more after its been used up/recycled too much. This is the ink for the product I mentioned: www.michaels.com/plastalina-modeling-clay-craft-smart/M10062623.html
@UltimatePaperMache5 жыл бұрын
I haven't used that particular brand, but I like the Sargent's plastilina. It's fairly soft, so you can't get tiny details, but it works OK for a mask form. I don't care for Monster Clay because you have to heat it to make it soft enough to work, and it keeps changing consistency as it cools. It's fantastic for people who do really fine details, but that's not my style. I use my WED clay over and over, although you have to be careful to not get plaster or paper mache stuck in it. If that happens, you have to get some more.
@ignisking7595 жыл бұрын
@@UltimatePaperMache Alright, I might then add your brand to my shopping cart next time I'm amazon shopping for art supplies and whatnot.
@ignisking7595 жыл бұрын
@@UltimatePaperMache I see, do you have a preferred brand of WED then? Worst Case I imagine I'd have to put extra effort into bagging my work so it stays wet (even if its slow drying) so I can work on my pieces the next day/week/month.
@UltimatePaperMache5 жыл бұрын
@@ignisking759 I think WED clay is only made by the Laguna clay company. It's a brand name, and the WED stands for Walt E Disney. I buy mine now from amazon.com, but larger pottery stores often carry it. You can find it online here: amzn.to/2PfP80g

How to make clay ?
@UltimatePaperMache6 жыл бұрын
I just put out a new video with the paper mache clay recipe. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4q0Z5iLpsh4npo Is that what you meant? The clay I used to create the form for the mask is a wet clay, like normal pottery clay. But an oil-based clay would be a better choice. I don't know how to make that.
