Make a microphone out of a matchbox and pencil leads. Listen to sounds and music from the other side of the house using this DIY microphone. Simple audio electronics project. You will also need a battery, some wires and clips, and a pair of headphones or a speaker. Fun and simple science experiment, and great to do with children.

For those of you wondering, you can use metal instead of pencil lead. I've been experimenting with two paper clips as the connections and different materials as the free-floating part, and have found something that should be discussed. I first tried 3 paper clips stripped across the bridge, with 4 AA batteries hooked up to it in series. I could only hear loud bumps and buzzing. After experimenting and reducing to two AA batteries and only using 1 paper clip, I found that if I talked very quietly, I could hear what I said - but it was still bugging out my headphones. I then attempted a piece of aluminum foil folded accordion - style. It was so loud that it made loud bumps on my headphones and hurt my ears. The reason graphite doesn't do this is because, though it conducts electricity, it acts as a resistor; as in, it makes it much harder for electricity to flow through it. In conclusion, to use metal instead of graphite, you will either want to hook up a customized circuit to reduce the current, or, for those of you who can't, if you use a 1.5v AA battery with two paper clips as the connections and a paper clip across the middle for the actual microphone part, using a 200 ohm resistor (Or 220 ohm resistor) hooked up on the positive lead of the battery will bring the amps down to 7.5 amps, (or 6.8 amps) and will hopefully prevent your headphones or speaker from blowing out. SERIOUS NOTE: I am still new to calculating resistance, and this is all theory until I have a chance to actually get some resistors, so use headphones that you don't care whether or not they are destroyed, and DO NOT PLUG INTO AN ELECTRONIC unless you are ABSOLUTELY CONFIDENT that it is safe, or else you may just ruin ports on your computer or other device. Hope this helps!

Attach both sides of the battery to the "microphone" and you've got the basic structure of a railgun. It shouldn't be powerful enough to move anything, but crank up the power input by daisy chaining batteries and the smaller graphite piece will move down the line.

That's pretty amazing a microphone is so simple. I think when edison made his, he called it the carbon transmitter. To clarify in case it hasn't been discussed, pencil lead is made of a graphite powder mixed with wax and pressed into the familiar shape.

I just finished making this project. Now, the sound works. But you can't hear voices or talking, anything like that. You can only hear static when you tap on the box or lead. The "lead" works with graphite, because nowadays you can't find real lead pencils. Anyways, this was a cool project that I enjoyed doing. Well worth it! Thanks Dave.

I made a slight improvement of this experiment. Instead of using 3 pieces of graphite, I only used one. The two supports were solid core, bared copper wire. To stop the graphite from falling off, I put a tight loop in each of the wires, places the graphite through both loops, and then inserted into the box.

I built one of these microphones and plugged it into my new meze headphones, and within seconds, they went from meze to messy as magic smoke billowed out from them. Seriously though, I blew out a pair of decent earbuds trying this. If anyone is going to try this, I suggest working up from 2 AA or AAA batteries, then 4, then finally a 9v.

+PavelTayTay With headphones, you absolutely get what you pay for. If you care about music or work with audio, $300 is more than fair for a great set of workhorse headphones. If you just want to listen to Top 40 trash while you workout, stick to the cheap garbage. It's all about what you want and what your needs are. $300 for good headphones is VERY reasonable.

powered with a 9v battery, you can just tap the two leads together to get a tapping sound. If this "microphone" does nothing more than that, it's completely worthless. If it DOES atually transmit sound, why not let us hear it?

@@ender0998 It wouldn't have cost DaveHax a thing to show us whether his"microphone" transmitted sound. It would cost any of us time and energy to prove the hypothesis that HE presented. As I think, as the little grafite is jumping (vibrating) on top of the other two grafites, this makes the current flowing and stops it too. When it touches the two grafites then the current can flow, when it doesn't touches all the two grafites then there is no connection for the current to flow. And this current on/off vibration makes the speaker's membran vibrating (because of the speaker's coil's vibrating current->vibrating magnetic field->little peace of magnet or just steel is pulled-pushed), and that makes the air vibrating and that is what we can hear.
