How to Make a Mixed Media Accordion Book | DIY Art Journal Tutorial

This is my take on creating a Mixed Media Accordion Book/Journal/Zine. This was so fun to make, despite some technological difficulties (yay Mondays)! In this video, I used mixed media collage as well as mark making and doodles…all the things I love in one project! This creates a colorful foundation for adding more details, words or photos. Enjoy this project on your own, or in a group. Children would love this as well!

I love your books. Definitely going to try some. Some words of wisdom from an elder. I used masking tape on many artworks in my youth. About 15 to 20 years later, packing up my art for a move, I discovered that all the masking tape had lost its adherence and worse, had left ugly brown stains on all my work. Please don’t say that you don’t care about how your art lasts. Believe, time flies when you are making art.

Ahh yes, I have experienced this as well. Thanks for the reminder! When I use masking tape on my wall art, I always adhere it with additional glue to it stays down over time.

What weight paper did you use? I made a prototype on 50# but too light. Although I cycled through a lot of my dry markers, pens, watercolor crayons to throw out duds. But eager to make another on heavier paper. Thx!

Hey! This was about 140lb paper, so definitely heavier and thick enough to hold the colors/collage. Try it again and let me know how it goes!

I love making these. I recommend you try just joining the ends of the sections with tape without overlapping the pages. It’s strong enough you don’t have to worry about them coming apart. (Hate to see any of your beautiful art covered up!)
