Beautiful heirloom piece, Johnny. Your son will want to take it to college with him! We had a very similar dresser as our changing table (albeit an Ikea version), and outfitting the top drawer with compartment organizers (also from Ikea) made holding all the baby ephemera much more manageable. Diapers, lotions, thermometers, etc. We even had a baby wipe warmer in the drawer, and fished the cord through the back of the cabinet (baby tushes like warm wipes!). We'd just pull out the drawer during diaper changes, and everything we needed was right at our finger-tips (handy, when your baby is trying to squirm his way off the table). Congratulations on your growing family. Being a dad is as good as it gets. Enjoy!
@craftedworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve! We definitely plan on organizing this a little better, that wipe warmer sounds cool!
@Sanny37136 жыл бұрын
Crafted Workshop just my own two cents on wipe warmers. (Mom of two) They make changing diapers one more step. And if you don't have any warm ones, suddenly regular wipes are the worst thing to happen to your baby ever! (Based on their cries). For your own sanity, and for quickness of taking care of a task that you will preform countless times, I suggest skipping the warmer. All of that being said, enjoy your baby and you do you! Also, thanks for sharing your art with us. It's beautiful

Hi Johnny. I know that this build has to be extra special for you as you're making it for your son. I wasn't bitten by the woodworking bug when my kids were little but I'm now enjoying building for my grand-kids. I'm currently building a cradle for my grandson who'll be arriving the first of June.

That's awesome! It's definitely been really cool to be able to build a bunch of stuff for the nursery, definitely some of my most special builds.

This is one my favorites you've done! Re: paint....Montana Gold. The difference between Rusto and Montana is night and day. One coat is pretty much all you need, and it's far more durable. It or any other acrylic graffiti can will work, just make sure to get a low pressure variety (unless you are covering a large area). I've tried Ironlak and MTN94 as well, and they are also really good.
@craftedworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike! And good tips, I’m going to buy some cans of different brands to play around with.
@johncallaway74106 жыл бұрын
Came to say the same thing. Montana paint. It was originally created for graffiti artists, stuff lays down super smooth, color choices are insanely abundant. Find a art supply store near you, they should have a big selection.
@ahero4heor6 жыл бұрын
Surprised to hear good results from Montana. I've never had a good experience using it in modelmaking because it does go on so thick. If I have to use it I leave it for a couple weeks because it doesn't cure well otherwise

Great piece!! And congrats. One suggestion that we've learned from experience on change tables with drawers... strap/attach it to the wall. Our toddler opened up a drawer of our change table trying to get into it and the whole dresser tipped on top of her. Luckily, mom was there to save the day.

If you are doing rebate joints for the carcass like you did, you can cut the rebates for the back panel before you glue it up and you don't have to do the messy router work.
@craftedworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Yea it would have been a little tricky since it would have been a stopped rabbet on the table saw. I didn’t have the back panel run the full area of the back of the piece. Otherwise, that would have been a great option.
@dan__________________6 жыл бұрын
You don't need stopped rebates. You make the dado's for the shelf on the case sides the same depth as the rebates for the back panels :)

Your pliers are short is prolly why it was challenging to cut the brass rod. I cut 8 and 6 awg wire with lineman pliers. I have an 8" klein lineman and a 9" channel lock lineman pliers. Both work well but the extra inch make a lot of difference.

Solid #johnnysquat in this one. For paints look to what graffiti/mural artists use. Montana Gold, Flame, Sugar, Belton Molotow are all options. Chances are an art supply store in your town will have Montana Gold at a minimum and might have the other options too.
