I made a self-watering moss pole. almost the same as this one. but i have a pvc pipe in it. (Closed on the bottom) a piece of cotton rope in the pipe and wraped around it. Then you can fill the pipe with water (i do it once a week) the rope absorbs the water and ensures that the moss remains moist. I also made the pipe longer then the moss part. So i can use the pole as a stake.

Wish I could see how you did it! So the rope leaves the inner pipe where? I don't follow how the rope meanders through the setup. But I want to build one

Insert a 1/2” PVC pipe in the center of your moss pole leaving 8+ inches (the depth of your pot) exposed at the bottom. Place the exposed section of pipe into the pot to anchor the moss pole. Use PVC couplers to add more sections (height) to the moss pole. Another option is to drill holes into the pipe before construction so that you can water the plant by pouring water into the top of the pipe.

Crisscrossing some zip ties below the sphagnum keeps it from sliding down…🤔

@patriciatatich3014 dumb question but......How is the spagnum going to fall or drop when the bottom is touching the soil? Will it just baturally compress together over time?

Hi Nick! WOW! I never realized there was an easy way to make a moss pole. I've seen other videos on making them and they were pretty complicated. Thank you so much for sharing and for the link.

I just wanted to say that you are my absolute favorite plant KZbinr ever. I love how you are so informative and knowledgeable, but still have a great sense of humor. I'm here to learn about plants, not hear someone pretend they don't know how to pronounce plant names 🙄(a KZbinr pet peeves of mine -it ain't cute!). Also, I freaked out last week because I've been reading the book Wiseguys that one of my favorite movies, Goodfellas, was based on. My bf happened to read the author's name out loud, which is Nicholas Pileggi, and I was like what?? No way! I didn't even realize that. 😂

What do you mean by pretend they don't know how to pronounce plant names? A KZbinr does that?

The sphag moss tends to be the most expensive component. To prevent it from settling/compacting, I start add a course Orchid/bark mix down the middle. Then another thin row of sifted compost in the middle of the course mix. Ideally the course mix stays locked in and prevents the moss from shifting down, increases O2 exchange and deter mold. The compost in the center should be sifted to prevent cloging the course center lower in the pole after watering, and acting as a wick to maintain even moister throughout pole.

I like to taper the bottom to a point. I snip like you did at first but go diagonally by 2 or 3, creating 2-3 skinny triangular-ish cut outs and fastening w zip ties (if you need to add it to an already well rooted pot. If I’m using it w Hoyas I roll a stick up in the middle of the spag before fastening. Bc I don’t want my Hoya roots getting all up in that wire if I later decide to remove it.

I'm really interested in seeing you put this in a pot with a plant. Personally my biggest question I still have unanswered in regards to moss poles is how to make it stay up straight with the whole plant. I made my moss poles with a bamboo stick in the middle that really goes down into the soil with the plant. And this didn't work, my plants get so heavy they tip over.

Why does my spag dry out sooo damn fast. I swear I soak my moss for like 20 minutes every single day and it’s always bone dry. And my rooms humidity is like 65% I think all the moisture doesn’t stay in the moss where I want it just goes instantly into the air.

Do you think it could work with coco coir instead of moss? Sphagnum moss is kinda hard to get where I live, plus, it's less sustainable from what I've heard. I also saw a video where someone made a pole with a pvc pipe wrapped in jute instead of moss, but I have doubts it'll work long term, for example, on a monstera.
@vanessap73932 жыл бұрын
I tried jute and it did not work.
@jimc6694 Жыл бұрын
I have always used coco coir and wrap it around a structure. I guess it's not really a true "moss pole". I dont wet it either. Which kind of defeats the purpose. I guess I use it more as a structure because the aroids dont really root n into it. I really like Nick's idea.
