THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!! Very easy to make and solves two problems that literally no other moss pole addresses: reusability and getting plants out of them without mangling the roots. The only downside is decreased exposed area for plants to climb compared with D-shaped moss poles (can fit more stems on these), but the pros far outweigh this one con. I have several plants that have been happily climbing these poles for about six months now. I did not make the separate bottom piece and have not had issues with roots wrapping around. Can't thank you enough Lee!

There’s so many benefits to this design IMO opinion, especially when removing plants for propagation. It may seem harder for people who aren’t that competent with power tools but if you know how to use them this would be so quick. Nice job!

I think this is brilliant! No reason why the tubes themselves can't be coated in something like window sealant (not the stuff with the mould inhibitor) and rolled in dry coir compost to make it look more natural. Lots of people do that to make terrarium backgrounds, fake roots and vines, so why not a moss pole? Maybe the roots would grow onto it, but then I had one that grew onto the paint on a cupboard door so...

My favorite video of yours so far. Well done!!! Seems like the key elements are to enclose as much of your pole as possible while giving your plant stems enough surface area to root into. Love the no grid aspect and minimum fasteners. And yes yes yes on the matte black and making pieces in bulk for easy future maintenance. The lazy pole with clear bendy plastic is pretty easy too. I used acrylic stakes for support and cut the plastic to create a ‘C’ shape. Then I cut plastic strips to fit around the plastic, moss and stem. I cut the width to fit in between the petioles. I add moss and fasteners as the plant grows. The clear plastic backing is barely visible and extends around 1/3 higher than the total height of the plant. KZbinrs youdontevengrowhere and unplantparenthood give some great examples. But your version is definitely more substantial which seems more ideal when strong support is beneficial (like when pets or people may knock into them). Grateful for this inspiration!
@KillThisPlant2 жыл бұрын
I think they both use the ones North Shore Tropicals developed? I like that design and I really like north Shore Tropicals but I do think you have to have concerns about stability once you get more than one. Thanks for the comment. Your idea sounds great. Send me pictures of what it looks like on insta
@aplantprocess2 жыл бұрын
@@KillThisPlant, I hope my stakes inside the plastic provides adequate stability but nothing like the stability of yours. Your version is genius. But… I don’t expect to extend my plastic poles much so it isn’t a huge concern. Instead, I think I can chop and prop without too much of a disruption to the plant once they have roots growing well into the moss. I tagged you on a post of some examples of my experiments. Guessing you’re tagged a lot. You can find my pole pictures 😂 on #aplantprocess.

@BblzCalhoun2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it's the best or the easiest but it is another option for some. The tools required alone cancels most people out of being able to make their own or even possibly being charged to have them cut to size. You could patent and market the idea though or just make some to sell. I would also consider trying to see how easily it would hold the moss with both sides cut out as another option. For folks who like fuller plants, plants on both sides or even less of the pipe visually to worry about aesthetics wise.
@lindseysgreencanvas11 ай бұрын
right, power tools automatically make it impossible for me. I can make the mesh fronts with plastic backing all from products I can find online and be delivered. Plus I want to see inside the poles to see the plant roots. My only concern with the PVC poles and cutting out both sides like you suggested, would keeping the moss damp if they're that open. It would be great though for air circulation and keeping pests out, but you'd definitely be spraying them down once a day, which is already a huge complaint for a lot of moss pole users, they don't have the time.

Brilliant! I like how the base is low and not so much in the way while you fill the pot with soil.
@guyrisch7400 Жыл бұрын
Great idea! I have started making these now as my standard moss pole. I found that filling the pipe with sphagnum moss was expensive so now I screw a 25mm x 25mm old hardwood tomato stake inside the back of the pipe section (along its whole length) to reduce the amount of moss I use. I figure if this timber gets saturated then it will help in preventing the moss and plant roots from drying out. Also, I find that when I cut-out sections for the pipe, i can glue two sections at both ends into a connectors or bits of pipe and form a double-sided moss pole. I then grow the two of the same plants up on either side of the pole. The section that is below the soil level in the pot I usually fill with coco coir to save on moss or potting medium, and to provide a moisture retentive point at the base of the pole. I use a circular saw for cutting the pipe. Takes a bit of practice and a lot of patience to not crack the plastic. I also paint the white tubes with black fence paint once they are made.

Good stuff, have been thinking about it for a while... just can't get over the looks for now. Also a little note: if you actually got the tools for it, please wear a mask and do it in a well ventilated area, especially if you end with a finishing touch like sanding the edges etc.. PVC dust isn't something to mess around with, neither is dioxin, which is released upon getting PVC to it's melting point whilst cutting it for example. Stay safe and enjoy your build 🤗
