Travis man, You sure do have excellent taste in music. I loved that song you were playing during the video. You must be a perfect man. Now to compliment Brooklyn, she is one very pretty lady, with such a down to earth personality. She's not out there trying to show off body parts, like so many do. She's a perfect wife and mother. Then the two of you , made to perfect and precious sons! I believe God must really take liking too ya'll..as so many others do also... Tena

Plots are looking great and that compost is spectacular!! I think what you will find with no-till is that, over time, it gets easier and requires less compost, maintenance, fertilizer, etc. I’ve read that it can take 3-5 years to reach that stage, so patience is key. Great to see the kids out there helping you and Brooklyn in the garden. And I guarantee that if you had some shirts and hats printed with “I need to tell you something”, they would be your best selling merch. I chuckle whenever I hear Titus say that.

It wouldn't be feasible for me to make this much compost. It would take a massive space and a pretty big tractor to turn that much compost. Additionally, I don't have enough raw materials to make that much compost. We hardly have any leaves and no grass clippings. I know the guy that makes this stuff. Hello friend. My concern with your design is compaction and wasted compost. If you do rows instead of blocks you can reduce your compost requirements as the rows that you would walk and drive on won’t need compost. Additionally the rows would allow you to drive your tractor on without creating compaction. The block design isn’t an issue when your tilling as tilling would break up compaction.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
The reason we do it this way is due to variable row spacing. Right now all the plants in here are on a 3' row spacing. But when these are done, we might decide to plant a cover crop in there which would negate any row spacing. In the spring, we might decide to plant squash in there which would need to be on a 5-6' row spacing. We rotate heavily, and so a fixed row spacing doesn't really work for us. That's why we apply the compost on the entire plot.
@startingfromseed3
@startingfromseed3 2 жыл бұрын
Lazy Dog Farm I see. Remember I’m only trying to help with compaction and wasted compost. What if you did rectangle beds wide enough to accommodate your widest spacing? This way you can have walkways in between for driving the tractor. Or you can do smaller sized blocks so that the tractor can work on each side without driving on to your garden space. Food for thought.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
@@startingfromseed3 I think those fixed bed systems are great for standardizing things and work great for many market farmers because it allows them to easily calculate seed costs vs. crop returns, and it's easier to train their staff with the fixed system. I'm not opposed to trying it in one of our plots one of these days, but we don't use a tractor and soil compaction is not a huge issue for us.
@startingfromseed3
@startingfromseed3 2 жыл бұрын
Lazy Dog Farm I thought I heard you say that the tractor was driving on the plots and that it was a little compacted. I must have misheard you. Yeah, if those blocks work for you then that’s all that matters. 👍

You need to try some mulch in one of your no till plots…it makes a huge difference in one season…try to find some hay without seed heads in it or some form of clover or alfalfa hay…a nice 6” mat of hay and it can be done after you plant or before you plant and then you transplant with a trowel vs a furrow….you can mix straw with the hay but just straw or just wood chips is too high in carbon and will tie up nitrogen for the first year

The info on feeding schedule is most helpful. Since we may all be using different brands could you also mention the NPK of the stuff you are using to give us an idea of what you find works best for different crops. As a long time home food grower I follow the cost of fertilizer. Just yesterday I read, "Fertilizer prices have risen to a record high in North America, threatening to boost food inflation even higher. Nitrogen products are increasing due to the cost of natural gas, which is used in the manufacturing process. The Green Markets North America Fertilizer Price Index soared to a record high last week of $996.32 per short ton." Might be a good idea to get next years supply while you can.

I'm near Toronto and transplanted my first plants June 12 and they produced about 20 pods each compared to only about 4-5 pods per plant for those I transplanted on July 5. I didn't top my plants, just let them do their own thing unpruned. In the last 2 weeks there still were new flowers but they failed to turn into fruit. Even in September I'd say the flowers had only about 50% success rate, with the last pods harvested about a week ago. In August the flowers had more like 70-80% success rate. Probably too much cloud cover/less sun in the fall, although maybe cooler temps were also a factor? (it's been mostly around 65-75F in the day, 55-65F at night from Sept onwards) I think I'll aim to transplant in late May next year.

What are your thoughts on making a compost tea from the stuff you get? I think producing the microbes in the tea and spraying them would be a good way to get your no till plots revved up, I wonder if it would also help with nutrient loss in sandy soils.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
I think the compost tea works if you can indeed prove that the brewing process multiplies the microbes you're wanting to multiply. It would take a microscope to prove that though.

Travis, do you just lay the compost on top without mixing it in? I have access to mushroom compost here in central Florida, but I normally mix it in. Should I be just spreading it on top without mixing it in? Also, if using manure-based compost, how do you keep the weeds from going crazy?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
On many of my plots, I do mix it into the soil with the tiller. But for these no-till experimental plots, we're just putting it on top because the goal is not to disturb the soil structure. You can do it either way, we're just testing different methods here. If the compost is composted properly, there shouldn't be any viable weed seeds in it. The stuff we get has gotten very hot so all the weed seeds are killed.

I've planted it all throughout the winter and been fine. You'll risk losing a few heads from a random freeze, so just have to be ready to harvest the heads (no matter the size) if a freeze is coming.

This was my first year using those trays for seed starting. We had trouble getting good seed starting mix this last year and decided against fall planting this year. I have to start indoors but I had trouble getting consistent watering in the trays. Some seed starting mix (Coco coir base) almost acts hydrophobic, getting even water absorption across all cells is a struggle for me... And getting each cell full enough with mix without over packing (too dense) also was hard if that makes sense.
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
That's why we like to fill the trays with the mix when it's dry, then soak it really good before planting. It can be hard to soak it good if you're indoors. That Dramm shower nozzle we use in the greenhouse puts out plenty of water.

When I can, I like to make my starting mix in a bucket and wet it up pretty good just before I put it in the trays. Not saturated, but pretty damp. Seems like it helps the mix take an even watering thereafter.

Trying to go with something a little more sustainable that feeds the soil instead of just feeding the plants. I still use 20-20-20 on occasion as a rescue (because it works really well and really fast), but it doesn't do much for the long-term health of the soil.

Do you do any organic gardening or just no till gardening?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
We're mostly "organic" with our gardening practices, but I don't really like that term because it has been so misconstrued by the OMRI certification program. We use mostly organic fertilizers and organic pest control products, but I do use some 20-20-20 fertilizer on occasion. And we have to use Liquid Sevin on our field peas because there's not an organic control for pea curculio.

There are quite a few variations of "no-till" out there. Charles Dowding over in the UK does it the way we've done it here. I haven't had good luck terminating cover crops by just "knocking them down" or crimping them. They always come back. So the best way for me to terminate a cover crop is to mow and tarp it, or mow it and cover it with compost.

You sure don't do things in a a small way. Hard to say exactly what's causing so much damage in the greenhouse. Some of the leaves appear chlorotic. You're solid with your starter mix and the AgroThrive for nutrients. It looks to me like a disease pathogen but I can't tell which one and you're getting chewed on also. Pretty sure it's not damping off since that would hit at soil level plus you have the perlite there. I'd hit it with the Monterey Complete Disease and mix is some Azera per label when it arrives. Re-seed as necessary. I see that spinosad is not approved for Chinese cabbage in Georgia gardens. You may have to drive your plants down to Florida, spray them there, and then drive them back.
