Did you use refined or unrefined shea butter? It makes a difference. In this video I use refined mango butter. But, I do use unrefined shea butter on other formulas. I have a beard care product I use at night before bed. Works absolutely amazing! Great to use if you have damaged beard hairs or want to repair any slight damage to your beard from blow drying. When you use products like that at night, the shine and oiliness doesn't really matter since you're going to bed. Your beard needs raw ingredients from time to time. But during the day for styling purposes, I use the beard balm in this video.

I honestly dont know if it was refined or not, i know that like you said it would be great as a butter ( since there is very little hold ) to use as part of the nitetime routine!!! Im going to attempt with your recipe and see how it turns out!!! Thnx again👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Awesome video, of all the how to videos I've watched this one is my favorite. Last night I got a scale and followed the recipe exactly with the same mango butter, almond oil and grape seed oil. Added my own essential oils that my wife has from Young Living(expensive oils). It came out great and the hold is awesome. Thanks for the info!

Awesome! Great to hear. Yes, I really like the hold on this formula. It's not greasy or oily. This is something I use during the day for sure! What scent did you use for your essential oils? At night however, I use my beard oil that includes castor oil as a main ingredient. Yes, it is a little on the heavy side, but it feels amazing! I add a dash of menthol crystals to give that really cool feeling.

So, I'm in the experimenting phase, making different variations of balms. I made one a few weeks ago which contained: 1 tbsp beeswax 2 tsp shea 1 tsp coconutoil 1 tsp almondoil 1 tsp avocadooil And some essential oils...I cant remember exactly how I did it, but I use double boiler, low heat, melted all at once (except essentials of course) and poured it to a 30 ml jar, let it solidify in room temp. The result was medium soft, non-greasy..Very much how I wanted it. NOW! Yesterday, I made the exact same recipe! It came out harder, greasier...Is it the heat!??? The cooling process? I dont get it! Ive tried having less wax, more shea..its too greasy. More wax too hard.
@gnomebeard407
@gnomebeard407 6 жыл бұрын
There are several variables to ask. •Are you using the same exact brand of oils/butters? •Are you using refined or unrefined shea butter and coconut oil? Yes, temperature is a HUGE factor in making balms. This is no different than cooking food. Think about it, if you wanted to make beef stew would you slow cook under low heat or would you use high heat just to hurry up and eat already? There would be a big difference in taste, correct? It's all about temperature control. Also try using an electric burner, if you're using a stove it might be getting way too hot. I never go over 180 degrees F. Also do not measure in tablespoons, always measure in grams. Using the metric system when making cosmetics is much more efficient and accurate. This way you get a consistent product each and every time. Packing shea butter in a spoon may be different each time depending on how much you applied pressure to even out the butter. Weighing on the other hand will get you VERY precise results. Right after every melts at say about 160-170 degrees, KEEP it at that temperature for about 15-20 minutes. Try to control the temperature. Remember YOU are the chef. Once you're done experiment with the cooling phase. Try cooling at room temperature and try cooling in the fridge. See what's best for YOU. I have my preference. The balm in this video is for a STYLING beard balm. I wanted more control through-out the day. I do have a leave-in conditioning beard balm that is more for conditioning purposes. Stay tuned, I will be uploading. Thank you for your comment! Please subscribe!

Gnome Beard Refined shea. Same as the first time. Unrefined coconut, same. Coldpressed carrier oils. I use very low heat on the stove, and double boiler. But I don't have anything to measure the temperature with. Since I used tablespoon and teaspoon the time I was pleased with the result I figured I'd try it again. Been going by grams otherwise but never been that pleased with the results. Too hard or too greasy.

I've noticed I break out a little with quite a few beard products, and low and behold, they all have castor oil in it. I'm definitely going to try this out. How would you compare Jojoba oil to Grape seed oil (for sensitive skin)?
@gnomebeard407
@gnomebeard407 6 жыл бұрын
Andy Sims Yes, castor seed oil is very thick and slow to absorb in the skin so it creates a thin layer of oil on your beard. If used in combination with a fast absorbing oil it isn't that bad. But as far as sensitivity goes, everyone is different. I always recommend you apply a small amount in an area of your skin before just to test it out. Jojoba oil has an average speed of absorption. There is golden jojoba oil that is unrefined and white jojoba oil that is refined. You should try carrier oils that are refined. The only issue is many beard companies will not tell you if they use unrefined or refined oils in their products. Try Doctor Squirrel Grooming Co they have one of the best beard balms and oils in the market. @doctor_squirrel is their Instagram.

are you asking if it's organic? it states that it is "organic", but it is not USDA organic. The term organic is used loosely in Amazon cosmetic marketing. Its pretty good so far.
