WOW... EXCELLENT VIDEO... AMAZING. I have been waiting for 20 Years for this video. I have so many manuscripts waiting to be published... and knowing that somehow I could do my own bookbinding some day... reason being, I had taken my manuscript to a printer/publisher in a tiny town in New Mexico... Lincoln County, New Mexico... (hint hint) "Billy the Kid" Country. I have written a book on BTK... and was told NOT to go to this certain said publisher, because they were known to "Sell out the backdoor" because they would use the ISBN # of the book... I didn't believe it... so I went to this printer/publisher... but I wanted to do the binding on my book, because the first 50 books would be signed & number with leather book cover and gold lettering. The printer insisted on buying the ISBN #... and would NOT print my manuscript if they could not also have the cover. She really wanted to print and publish my manuscript on Billy the Kid.HUM... I guess a few people were saying had to be true. I told the owner of the printing company what I had heard (still not wanting to believe it)... and that I would not let her print and publish my book... The look on the ladies face was a tell-tale sign, a few months later, she closed her business and moved out of town. Since then, I have written a few more books (manuscripts)... knowing I couldn't do it justice because I only knew of the old method of book binding and not having a machine to CUT the paper... UNTIL TODAY... YOUR VIDEO... has changed my life. I love the way you did this book. 11:44... (Be still my heart) ... Where did you get that small paper cutter... That is Unreal... That is a Game Changer.... This video... YOU are a GOD-Send... I have tears in my eyes... so happy. Thank you with all my heart for making this video...

I think the fact that pages are only kept by the glue isn't strong, it would be better if you had those big staplers for book binding and did an additional staple very close to the spine to make sure they are not going anywhere. The guillotine is what really wraps this up so nice because the book has super straight edges and it all comes together as professional.

Hi!! This sounds silly but could you show us a bit more about the cover specifically and how you printed it? I have a laserjet home printer but last time I tried to print on something like cardstock (which weighs less than the paper you’re using for your cover) it didn’t work and I wasted a LOT of toner. I’d just love to see that process because I bind hardcover and paperback books and have yet to find a solution for this.

I've been following your tutorials lately, it's been great learnign how to program in OpenSesame, mostly because of the online experimentation option. I was so surprised when I saw this tutorial that I coulnd't help myself but to comment. I'm a big fan of short stories and bookbinding, I'm definitely trying this method! Also, I would like to know if there is a digital format option for purchasing these stories, as I'd be really happy to read them! It was fun and unexpected to see so many of the things I enjoy in one place! Thank you so much for all your tutorials! They allowed us (the staff at the lab) and our students to run experiments even without access to our lab during the pandemic, and now it made me want to try and print my very own book! Greetings from México!

Hey thanks so much for this tutorial!!! It was exactly what I was looking for!! (I put my writing in lil zines but I wanted to like make something more professional looking!!) I just have one question, how do you design the cover?
@wizardsamboltoni3 жыл бұрын
Oh, and additionally, how do you determine where the escape folds are? Thanks so much !! :))
3 жыл бұрын
I first measure how thick the spine should be (simply by measuring how thick the stack of inner pages is) and also decide approximately how much I want to cut off each side of the book. Then, based on those dimensions, I design the cover image in Inkscape, a graphics program. I use my own photos for that, because that's how vain I am, I suppose. As for the escape folds, it's largely a matter of taste. I put them about 7 mm from the spine, but you'll see that many paperbacks actually put them closer. It doesn't matter that much really, so I'd go with what you think looks good!

Hi Sebastian, thank you for posting this. I'm thinking about using your method to bind a pdf of an ebook I printed out on 8.5x11 office paper. How long does this method generally hold up? Also, do you think it would made the book more durable if you used a saw to make cuts every 1 cm (to allow more glue in there)?
2 жыл бұрын
I've started making books of this type around two years ago now, and it seems they're quite durable even after extensive reading. I don't think that cutting the paper will add much. However, getting actual bookbinding glue and using mull (as shown in the video) does make a big difference.
