I made this darling bag. I did use 2 pieces of fabric from a layer cake. It turned out really nice and very easy to make. I did top stitch on the fabric at the zipper opening to hold back both the top piece of fabric and the lining. It really finishes the bag. Thanks for the printed directions. Also, make sure the tab lines up with the zipper. My first one was just a little off. Thanks for this fun and really easy project.

The problem with this method though is it does not instruct you to top stitch along the zipper, which is very important.
@maplelassuk5 жыл бұрын
Livinnpjs I normally top stitch all zippers, but don't on this style, works fine, simply because I do my lining separately and hand stitch it along the a zipper to attach. If you have the lining sewn in at the same time it's better to top stitch, I agree!

I made one of these so far. I put the interfacing on both the front and the lining. It gave it a little more structure. It holds my ear buds and charging cord for my cell phone. Going to make a bunch more!! They would be great for craft fairs. Thanks for the tutorial.

Really excellent tutorial, Jen! I was so scared of zippers till I started making project bags so. One tip I have is …. ALWAYS remove your zipper foot as soon as you have finished with it. Otherwise the machine may revert to settings and BAM! One broken needle etc. Ask me how I know! I like how you allow us to see the whole process of pulling and teasing the fabric so that it doesn’t look too easy. That’s what would happen for us in the sewing room too and that is so very helpful

Made my first one on the weekend Morgan...the few things I did differently were to choose a single piece of solid for the lining ... I also must have put my zipper along the wrong edge but I rechecked and put it along the 9 1/2 inch side, as mine came out with the patchwork stripes being Vertical rather than horizontal but I think I prefer that anyway. Also I ironed on H940 fusible to the main back rather than the lining. I then also neatened the side seams and then to trim off and neaten the boxed corners. I really appreciated Jen's showing us how to orientate the fabrics when it came to the 2nd zipper side. Oh and I also top stitched alongside the zipper teeth on the main side. I'll certainly be making more...thank you for the tutorial and Moda for the pattern...Lindy

I love making bags like this, they can be used for so many different things. Only things I do different are: -I add a tab on both ends to help pull the zipper -ALWAYS top stitch to secure the fabric away from the zipper -I hand stitch a loop to hold the open end of the zipper together after I move the zipper so it stays in place while I sew -I reinforce over the zipper a couple times -I recommend a fusible fleece to line the bag with, gives it nice shape without being too bulky. FYI: if you cut your interior and exterior pieces in half it will allow you to more easily sew the pieces to the zipper and top stitch very easily as well as hide your seams. I also dont trim the boxed corners, it helps the bag keep its shape.

I also do pretty much what Stephanie said but add also that I run a serg on my side seams and on my box corners.....even a beginner needs to know all the good extra tips so that they will be happy with their first bag. ******Most definitely top stitch the zipper on both sides. That secures the underneath so he tape doesn't flip up into the teeth while zipping

I love the video, but what if you didn’t want to make it like a patch bag what are the dimensions for solid fabric. Thank you
@sellabrations-theresamorri73646 жыл бұрын
Kimberly Little, you can make them any size you want. Just make sure your fabric is longer one way than the other. The bag size would be the longer fabric wrapped over, the zipper is placed on shorter side. Just be sure your zipper is bit longer so when you sew up the sides you won’t hit the metal stops. I also top stitch a 1/8” seam close to each side of the zipper, it makes the fabric lay flat and gives a nice professional look. Hope this helps.

Thanks for this tutorial Jen!! I made a couple of those pouches but I was not truly satisfied with my boxed corners , they all came out rather wonky to me 😞😞😞 I am really happy you showed a couple of tricks that explain the construction and clarify some blurred steps. Can you please advise on the interfacing? I used heavier ones, one I did with bosal. Can you please let me know if those are recommended or not? In my opinion they add to much bulk, but I’d like to know your opinion too. Thank you 😊
@ShabbyFabrics5 жыл бұрын
You're so welcome, and so glad you like it! :) Boxed corners can be a pain, but the more you practice the better they'll get! The interfacing is really up to you. If you want a bulkier bag that will easily hold it's shape, Bosal would be great. But if you want a lighter-weight bag, go with something else. It doesn't really matter as far as construction goes for a small bag like this. - Morgan

Sharon Francken I was the very same! But the secret is to watch different tutorials, and practise practise, you will find its much easier. Crafty Gemini, Debbie Shore, Missouri Star Quilt Co, are all fab too. I now prefer making tabs on the zipper first, and use a much larger zipper than you need so you can sew it in so easily and trim afterwards! I've lost my fear...pouches galore and know what way I like best!

Hi Doreen! We're so glad you liked the video! We appreciate you watching! Your ribbon pull probably just shifted during sewing or wasn't placed quite centered. Just double-checking your placement before sewing is what we recommend! :) - Morgan

I just need to ask a question about these pouches. Are the patterns different? One seems to go with horizontal patches and the other vertical patches. Maybe I am just confused. The pictures are different. Thank you.

Hi Pat! This is a Moda pattern that is available on our site. The pattern shows the patches going horizontal. We have noticed that the pictures are opposite of the pattern however, if you follow the pattern, you will get the horizontal patches! I've made two pouches with zippers! The first pouch had everything in place perfectly! The second one...the zipper was upside down..(zipper on the lining side). I watched this video segment 20 times before sewing it...and since...trying to figure out what went wrong...idk. what happened?

That's great the first pouch turned out perfect! For the second, make sure your fabrics are right side together, and place the zipper between them. Please let us know if you have any other questions! Thank you for watching! - Sophie

Ah, sorry, another question: why do you fleece to the lining and not the front body of the pouch ? It seems to me - just guessing - that fussing the fleece to the front will make the pouch more sturdy 🤔🤔🤔

You could finish them with a zig-zag stitch (like you suggested in your other comment). We so appreciate you watching! - Morgan
@maplelassuk5 жыл бұрын
Doreen Tavares you can actually make a separate lining and hand stitch it in at the zipper....see Debbie Shore's boxed pouch on KZbin. All finished inside x here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJWxpYJnp7FneZo

Another thing you could do is apply a bit of binding to the seams where you boxed the corners.

this is a good way to use scraps but you can off course have patchwork only on the outside if you want. these can be made bigger and if you do you can make extra pockets with zippers inside of the bag you do them on the lining first.

Love this tutorial... Big question, however: Why didn't you press the zipper and newly attached front and back of the bag to lay flat and maybe even stitch the zipper area from the 'right' side................

I was thinking edge stitching the zipper, too!!
@ellenr66416 жыл бұрын
Hi, I believe since it is sewn together as a tube, edge stitching will be quite difficult. Good luck!!
@barbaralevel72256 жыл бұрын
@@ellenr6641 In video at 13:05 both sides are flat with zipper inserted. That's when they are talking about pressing and topstitching bag. Keeps zipper from getting caught on the material beside it when you use it. You can guess how I know--years of sewing clothes :)
@ellenr66416 жыл бұрын
@@barbaralevel7225 I understand that, just thought it would be difficult to do when pouch was in a tube form. Difficult to keep other parts out of the way. Perhaps opening the zipper would help, and topstitch before closing the ends. I do agree the topstitching is absolutely best. Perhaps as someone else suggested open the bottom of bag. Kind of defeats the purpose of fast & ez zipper installing though. LOL

Use the 1/4" wonder tape to hold your zipper in place for sewing. It will keep it from migrating on you. I won't do a zipper without it any more.

Make sure you sew the zipper with the zipper teeth facing down on the front/top fabric. There are videos more detailed for sewing on zippers if you're still confused. Once you do it right...you'll be an expert. 😊

It can definitely be frustrating, we know how you feel. Do make sure the zipper teeth are facing down, like Sandra said. The downloadable pattern explains it pretty well, too, so make sure you use that along with the video. - Morgan

Zippers are pretty scary. I've been getting over my fear of them. I've been watching several videos on adding them. So I've been making small makeup bags while I practice. I've also made a couple cross body bags practicing making pockets with zippers. My daughter and some friends and family will benefit from my practicing.
