Mix together thoroughly:
6 pkts Knox Gelatin

Whether you're cooking or crafting and you have to mix a powder and a liquid, add the powder to the liquid in small amounts and stir after each addition. It really really helps to avoid lumps. So, rather than pouring the glycerin over the gelatin, I'd probably pour the glycerin in first then sprinkle with a packet of the gelatin, stir it up then another and stir. In a wide shallow pan like this it might not make any difference at all, but if you're mixing in a jar or even a bowl it really helps. How I remember is "it snows on the lake, it doesn't lake on the snow".

If you allow the gelatin to bloom in top of the glycerin for about 5 minutes or more, before pouring in the boiling water, it mixes better. If ppl have trouble getting the gelatin to dissolve, the mixture can be put into the microwave for 1 to 3 minutes & it should melt & mix thoroughly! Try not to let it boil over, as it's a mess to clean up. Doesn't harm it, though, except you may have a bit less mixture, but no harm!

I made a bunch of these 6 years ago for a class and they're still holding up great! I recently re-melted/re-molded them, and they look new again! There is no mildew or funky odors. I'm so thrilled these homemade Gellie plates can last for years instead of a couple of weeks or months. Definitely worth the time and $$$ savings to make them yourself!

First off, a Permanent Gel Plate never needs to be refrigerated. As Lindsay says, the addition of Glycerin to the mix plasticizes the gel plate. Second, Lindsay suggests 7 packs of gelatin, not 6. I've been using my Hectograph, via her recipe, for around 4 years, & have never put it into the fridge, & I have never had a speck of mold on it. If it gets scratched or becomes embedded with glitter, plant matter, fibers, etc, it's a simple matter of cutting the plate up & melting it by heating it in a microwave safe bowl for a minute or three. Watch it carefully as it is a big mess to clean up if you let it boil over. Guess how I know this. After it's melted, line a small strainer with several layers of damp cheesecloth, to strain the bits out. Then check to see if there are any bubbles on the top. If so, run a few strips of newspaper across it to remove the bubbles. Leave the gel plate out on the counter, or another level surface, for 6 to 8 hours for it to set up. No refrigeration required, & in fact, it's not good to store it in the refrigerator as it can collect moisture on the surface which can then harm the gel plate. If, after a year of play & remelting, you may experience some shrinkage. No problem. Put a few Tablespoons of water in the mix when you melt it again. After several years of use & remaking, I've added a half recipe to my 9" x 13" gel plate that I originally made with a double recipe. The other half of the mix gave me enough to make a smaller gel plate that I made by using a small Corning Ware round dish. Since the very beginning, I've made different sized gel plates & use them for different sized papers. Definitely cheaper than the commercial plates! I LOVE all of my gel plates & will forever be grateful to Lindsay for sharing her recipe with us!

So I found if you want to make a gel plate A4 size it's total cost is about fourteen pounds +. A bought gel plate same size is about twenty six pounds however the bought gel plate can produce better results. The interesting thing is the homemade plate isn't permanent and will start to breakdown after a month or so, the nice thing is you can chop it up and put it back in a pan to melt and make a new plate. The homemade Gel plate will darken with use.

+Sylvia Brown Hi, Sylvia.  I don't know if anyone responded to this for you, but just in case no one has... Lindsay, The Frugal Crafter (referred to in the above vid) explains the science behind this. She says that the glycerin changes the chemical structure of the gelatin into a plastic and thats why you don't need to put it in the frig if you use this recipe. In addition, Crafttestdummies (crafting channel on youtube) did a side by side comparison of homemade gelli plates and reported that the one with the glycerin held up fine, but the recipe using just water AND the recipe using water and sugar both molded. Hope that helps. I'm thinking I'm going to give it a try in the next couple of weeks. Those monoprints look like a lot of fun.

What are the pros and cons of adding rubbing alcohol;as some recipes include?
@CraftCastle11
@CraftCastle11 9 жыл бұрын
From what I can find....the negatives to using the alcohol are: 1. The alcohol causes an odor. This apparently does go away after a month or so. 2. There is mention of a possible mold issue with use of the alcohol. 3. Alcohol appears to be a contributor to shrinkage. The ones I have made were made without alcohol and are several months old stored in a dark cupboard. They have not moleded nor did they shrink or smell bad.

Check with family members, friends, co-workers when they buy or receive gifts. The plastic tray my new smart phone came in, I saved the tray as its a good size with edges for creating a gelli-plate. For Christmas, I bought two large flat plastic boxes filled with chocolates. The boxes, now empty of chocolates, are good sizes for gelli-plate making. Check the containers items come in, you may find the plastic trays you are looking for.
