These cremation urns are a beautiful way to remember loved pets that are now gone. I’ve made a handful of these now as gifts for friends and thought I’d share the process of making them here. These are mitered boxes with a picture frame front. A good way to practice and learn some techniques. I will be posting more videos soon so please like and subscribe. Thanks!

I know you were making these for pets but I've been trying to come up with a great design for my dad's ashes. I'm going to lean on your design. Thank you for the inspiration.

My cat died recently and I have been looking around for design ideas for an urn. Thank you for showing this; I like the embedded paw print. The crematorium will be taking her pawprint, so I can embed it in the wood; I really like that.

I’ll be making this for my beloved Dog we had to put down this last week. What size did you end up with for each panel?

What are the dimensions of the box? These look great and have given me an idea for my own dog's ashes.

Thanks! Dimensions can vary for these. I try to stay around 6.5x6.5 x9h. From what I’ve gathered, most of the time the ashes come in a box from the vet. I make the urn just big enough to fit that box inside.

what kind of wood did you use? what type of wipe on oil/stain did you use?

The urn being made during the video is walnut with maple splines. The other two are made from white oak/walnut splines and eastern cedar/ maple splines. The finish I used was just a wipe on poly. Watco if I remember right.

Great video! i am now subscribed! what blade do you use for your miter splines? Mine chips out and doesn't leave a flat bottom. Also, I immediately ordered the MillrightCNC and can't wait to get it. Is it hard to use? Can I download AutoCAD? or is it just pdf or jpg? Thanks in advance and keep up he great projects!

That’s awesome! Thank you! For the splines, I use a Freud dado stack. Sometimes painters tape and a slow feed rate will help with the chipping. For the flat bottom you’ll want to make sure the blades you use have a flat cut. Most combination blades will leave a middle groove or the bat ears. I have a Freud rip blade specifically for 1/8” splines. As far as Millright goes, I made a video on how I use mine that should help. It’s a great little machine. Thanks for watching!

Thanks! Usually, the ashes are in a box from the vet. I’ve made my urns just big enough to fit the original box inside.

Great job. Those came out excellent!! Maybe not making the glass permanent would be better. Odds are they will never go back in but if the glass broke they would be going back in to repair.

Good call. Since this video, I haven’t made any more but I’ve got an idea I’d like to try to resolve that problem for future urns.

Another option to keep that from happening is to use plexi-glass instead.
