How to Make a Photo Collage in Photoshop

Learn how to make a photo collage in Photoshop CC. Create your own photography template then add your photos by using "create Clipping Mask".
If you do not have "New Guide Layout", then follow these steps instead:
Go to View - New Guide. Then input Vertical 50%.
Then got to View - New Guide again. Then input Horizontal 50%.

You are right. Most tutorials on this site, talk and talk and for a guy like me, simply get confused. Your way is straight to the point a very easy to follow. Great job. I like to ask you how to solve one issue I had with the Photo Collage. When I get to the "Drag & Drop", inside the circle the cross lines do not desappear and I am not able to drag and drop the photos. Where did I go wrong? Appreciate your help, thank you.

In the layers panel, right click on the photo, then select "Create Clipping Mask". Also in the layers panel, make sure the photo is above the box you want it in.

I'm creating the Clipping Mask and the photo layer is above the layer I want to use for the image. Yet, the photos continue to bleed through to each other and the colours used to fill in the selection boxes are also bleeding through into the images I'm using.

Have your file opened in Photoshop. Then go to "Image > Mode", what name do you see check marked? When first creating the file you were suppose to set color mode to RGB & 8 bit or 16 bit which is usually default. You can try to save the file as a png or tiff, the reopen it in photoshop and save it as a jpeg.

This is a very valuable tutorial. Thank you. One question. If after placing the photos, if you want to switch a photo from one location to another, I guess the only way to do it would be to delete the photos and add them again. Or might there be a more efficient way of doing that?

You can right click on the photo layer and select "Release Clipping Mask". Then you can move the photo layer to another location.

Thanks for the video. I ended up using this for an introductory classroom assignment in my high school tech classes. If I may, you can speed up the process of adding the strokes around each layer by adding a stroke in the blending mode options. This has the added benefit that you can copy and paste the stroke quickly onto each layer. Thanks again.

Create New Layer above the shape, then go to Create Clipping Mask. Then when you want a new photo, just select shape, drop your photo on the document, then that photo should automatically be set to "Create Clipping Mask."

Another way of making a perfect circle is to select the Elliptical Marquee Tool. Then on the top change Style from Normal to Fixed Ratio. Make Width 1 and Height 1. Then make your circle.

Make sure there is a checkmark on View > Show > Guides. Then go to View > New Guide. Then input Horizontal, 50%. Make sure you put the % symbol.

Great tutorial, but I'm puzzled why we need to make individual color "fills" for each of the photo boxes? Why not go directly to pulling in the photos?

You can put the photos directly on the document. At the 4:20 mark you can see that I placed a photo in, then used the "Create Clipping Mask" feature. This allows your photo to attached to that one color box and not overflow into the other sections. As for using different colors, it's just easier to distinguish the location.

It is saved on my computer. Do not open the photo. Just drag and drop the file right onto the Photoshop document.
