The little bit of that identical “snap” sound that it has simultaneously with each individual tune is whatnmakes this particularly unique imo. Its like an instrument played with a crew of people speedily snapping along to each individual key.

I've been experimenting with popsickle stick kalimbas as well and something I found is that when you cut the sticks thinner for the high notes, they resonate better
@totalbiscuit4758
@totalbiscuit4758 9 ай бұрын
The same concept applies to (acoustic) stringed instruments. If you make the face thinner, the instrument will resonate better. This technique was popular with Romani and Vaudeville musicians, who would take a really cheap instrument and sand the face down until it was paper thin. This resulted in violins that sounded like a Stradivarius or Cremona -- but had the approximate lifespan of a mayfly.

May I ask… Do you mean to make the popsicle sticks thinner (making them more two dimensional, so shaving them) or do you mean thinner like using the original sized popsicle sticks (not as wide)? I’m TRYING (poorly) to ask about changing thickness or width.

@TheStiepen

a contact microphone could also be a good idea
@keithmills778
@keithmills778 3 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking the same thing. Right now, it’s just part of the stick that’s vibrating. But if the sticks were attached to a hollow body, like guitar strings are, you should get more volume out of it. And a contact mic on the resonant box would work better. As it is, it’s really only part of each stick that’s vibrating, so a contact mic on the solid wood bits wouldn’t pick up much.
@paullee5573
@paullee5573 3 жыл бұрын
I was also thinking along similar lines. But electronically. I thing a simple 4 diode two transformer ring modulator connected to a cheap mike and a small amplifier would open up an entire new world of electronic music. Cost of a ring mod is less than £7 , amp...about the same, mike....about £3 and a small speaker about £3. So 20 quid would have you up and running.
@___xyz___
@___xyz___ 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, so sad to take such a nice warm woody acoustic instrument and tether it to an electronic mic+amp rig in order to get something out of it. I'm much in favour of a soundbox. Giving the popsicles some air in a resonant cavity just brings the thocks to life. And you wouldn't have to go and fetch wires and batteries every time you just wanna jam out on the floor real quick.

You can say it's "just a kalimba" but you're wholly ignoring at least two important details: 1.) it's chromatic -- sort of unusual for a kalimba 2.) it's arranged as a keyboard instrument, and even has recessed black keys -- not something I've *ever* seen on a kalimba. My gut says that, from the performer's perspective, it's closer to being a keyboard than it is to being a thumb piano; I mean, you didn't have to learn the circle of fifths to figure out where your next note is like you would have to on an array mbira, and you *definitely* would want to use more than just your thumbs to play notes. This instrument makes sound differently than a pianoforte might, but there are a number of historical keyboard instruments that did exactly this. The way the sound is produced matters, but *keyboard instruments are keyboard instruments.* tl;dr this is cool, who cares what it's called

Then I watched and was like, "oh wait, I forgot, it would be way easier to just tune as you go with an adjustable system like that." "This creation wouldn't even be in the chordophone family due to no strings, so it'd be some form of plucked idiophone" Probably a lamellophone -- an instrument that makes its sound by the vibration of 'lamella' (that is, 'tongues' that are fixed on one end and free on the other) after the musician depresses and quickly releases (usually in a sliding motion) the free end with a fingernail, finger, or hand. A kalimba/karimba/mbira is one of those, as are whale drums and mouth harps.

Things like this are the reason I love the internet. Music can be a bit prohibitive at times because of the high cost of the instruments, but now you can watch a two minute and a half video and build yourself your own "piano" with extremely cheap materials that maybe you already have lying around at your home. Amazing.

I don't know if you've ever examined the keyboard structure of piano keys. But if you notice in an actual piano, they have felt cushioning for all of the keys. You could actually fit a piece of craft felt beneath the backside of your Popsicle sticks to dampen and eliminate the excess vibration. You could also increase the resonant quality of the keys by hollowing out below the keyboard assembly with a router. To eliminate any remaining vibration you could try putting a thin strip of rubber beneath the screw mounts for the keyboard assembly. It would be a simple matter of punching the holes for the screws with a hole punch. Add some small nylon or plastic washers to the heads of the screws to dampen excess vibration even more. The presence of the rubber strip below and the washers above the popsicle keyboard assembly will vastly improve the resonant quality of your keyboard. Anchor what would be the black key assembly on top of the white keys with screws and with a layer of craft felt between the layers to absorb unwanted vibration. Fantastic invention! Try some of my suggestions to see if you can improve how it sounds. Routing out beneath the leading edge of the keys creates a resonance chamber that will amplify the sounds naturally. I'll bet if you follow these steps and experiment, you'd end up with a really playable and fantastic musical instrument. Thanks for this awesome video!!!
