Join Steve Hay on this new Woodworking Masterclass project of making a Plate Rack. Though mainly a Hand Tool Project, as usual, Steve will guide you through the entire process whether you use Hand Tools, Power Tools or Machinery. Part 1 covers the conception on an idea the setting up, drawing and initial shaping of the timber for the project. Bob's there but for obvious reasons does not get involved. Keep your eye open for our Patreon campaign starting soon. Great rewards and benefits on offer. More details next video.

Steve, you could have practiced detailed woodworking just fine in the 1600s. According to Wikipedia eyeglasses were invented in 1286 in Pisa, Italy and were common enough by 1301 that Venice had guild regulations governing their sale. Cheers, and looking forward to the rest of this "honey-do" project.

+Michael Anderson Well that's comforting to know that Michael. Seriously I am in awe at some of the work from those times as they had none of the refined metals that we use now-a-days in even the most basic of our tools.Then again, if we are still here in another 400 years will future generations think that we struggled with the technology we have now in comparison to what may be ahead. Given a choice I would go back not forward. Oh well enough dreaming back to the Bench of today. Cheers Steve

Hey Steve, just wanted to say thanks for yet another great project. I think I've seen just about every one you have on KZbin now (and had no problem following from episode to episode - KZbin actually automatically shows the next in the series in the "Up next" section ;) Anyway, love the processes, tips and tricks and especially the way you don't hide your mistakes but show us how to work around them. Love all your work mate, keep it up. Dave E | Western Australia ;)

+Willem Kossen Something very special about a wooden plane isn't there? The ones I was using are Australian made 'HNT.Gordon. A friend of mine makes them. A group of us go out into the Bush a couple of times a years a get our own timber. I have a documentary I am making following the progress from Tree to Tool. I hope to have it finished by the end of the year. Cheers Steve '

What kind of timber is this? Is it some kind of Walnut?
@Woodworkingmasterclass
@Woodworkingmasterclass 9 жыл бұрын
+Tomy Hovington It's call Queensland Walnut, not a true Walnut. Works wonderfully but the smell is a bit off putting if you're not used to it.Cheers Steve

It's hard to explain what feeling you get out off just using hand tools, I spent 2 hours last weekend flattening a bit of wet cypress pine, just love the smell, then put the savings in lamp oil, now I have a shed that has a delightful fragrance. Anyway how's that bed coming along Steve?
@Woodworkingmasterclass
@Woodworkingmasterclass 9 жыл бұрын
+Peter Linch I agree I think i'll start leaning more towards hand tools in the future. Bed is coming along slowly. Finally decided on the carving of the Posts. Going to look like a bed of melting chocolate when I've finished. Hours of Carving ahead. Cheers Steve

Hi - Just a few quick suggestions. Please show an image of the finished project at the beginning of every video. (You can actually set the image to be the thumbnail for the video.) When you create several related videos, create a KZbin Playlist so viewers can watch the videos in sequence easily. Try to avoid numbering videos in a series Part 3a, 3b, 3c, etc. because people might miss the some of the videos and they won't be able to tell how many videos there are in total. Make it easy for viewers to watch and find your videos and you'll get a lot more views. It almost doesn't matter how good your videos may be if people can't figure out what they're about or find the next installment. You might consider filming all the segments of a project first before uploading any of them. That way, you'll be able to number them consecutively and won't frustrate people who try to follow along and then realize that the project isn't finished. Finally, it would be helpful if you gave a short overview of the project at the beginning of the fitst video, including a shot of the finished project. the dimensions of the finished project, a list of materials, a list of the main tools needed, the skill level needed to complete the project, and an indication of how much time is needed to watch all the videos AND an estimate of how it will take someone of the targeted skill level to actually complete it.

+biondatiziana Well that's a comprehensive check list and I really appreciate the thought that has gone into it. Firstly, on many videos I can't put up a finished Photo as I've not finished the project myself. 2. The Idea it that people can come on the journey with me as the project unfolds, mistakes and all! 3. The reason for a,b,c, etc. Is to shorten the segments for KZbin but still supply all the information. On the DVDs all information is together as with my Vimeo channel 4. At the end of each video there is a Billboard telling of the next segment. Like wise at the start of each video there is a Billboard announcing the segment. The skill level for all projects is also displayed here. 5. Due to the fact I do all the work myself from Designing, Making, Filming, Editing and Uploading the task to do it all in one time is counter productive. 6. It's not my intention to offer projects that people can copy outright as I believe this is not in the best interests of allowing people to inject their own creativity into something they make and grow accordingly. This is also the reason I seldom give actual sizes of materials used. As the proportions of what I make my not fit the purpose others have in mind. It is far better (in my opinion) to share processes, techniques and skills which can then be adapted and refined for and by the individual users. 7. I think the suggestion of putting all related videos together is fantastic and I will look into how to do that and try to group them in the future. Once more thanks for your time and thought that has gone into your comment. Cheers Steve
