Isn't VST3 owned by Steinberg? That's the thing, it is great and widely adopted, but it is still subject to Steinberg's licensing agreements and their decision making for deprecation. Just take for instance their stand on deprecating support for VST2; I heard that even releasing maintenance versions of VST2 is a pain because of their stand on deprecating it with respect to their license. I think CLAP should be the format of choice. Granted it is just gaining ground, but it is Open Source (MIT License) and modern. I believe u-he created it in collaboration with Bitwig, and was immediately released as Open Source. I am glad it is gaining ground. Hopefully it'll eventually go toe to toe with VST3 in terms of market share.

Yes, the VST formats are owned by Steinberg, and that in itself is the biggest justification for CLAP being a much better option. Unfortunately, DAW support isn't widely there for CLAP yet, only Bitwig and Reaper support it so far that I know of... The big issue for VST2 is that you can't download an SDK to build VST2s any more. So for anyone who doesn't already have a build environment setup, bad luck, you can't build VST2s. Steinberg could do the same for VST3s tomorrow if they so chose. It's a terrible situation, and a great incentive to move towards CLAP

This is a really shit issue. Steinberg has iron control over the plugin thing via the VST apis and its actually a bad situation becuase of the way they deprecated VST2 demonstrated they are NOT reliable stewards of the standard but what is a plugin dev to do? You can use these other formats, but guess what? Nobody is gonna use it cos half the DAWS need you to use VST. I'd love CLAP, RTAS, hell even a port to win/linux of AU to be dominant, all of them are objectively better formats, but commercially its VST or bust. And thats a bad thing. What SHOULD happen is all the DAW manufacturers (possibly except steinberg), Ableton, Apple, Presonus, Avid, Harrison, Mixcraft, Whoever owns Cubase, Bitwig, various Open source dudes, all the plugin makers etc needs to get together as a consortium and bless a new format free of Steinberg bullshit. If you do it smart, you might even be able to come up with a format that can be implemented by the DSP makers (UA, Antelope, etc) so that plugs can push their DSP into hardware. Fuck, even better, get Nvidia and AMD in to come up with a standard to push the processing into the GPU (its not as easy as you'd imagine due to the latency expectation differences of DSP vs GPU)

I want to make a deripper despitter, that low sibilance under 1k. Stripping everything under 2k makes esses sweet (especially headsets and close proximity cheap mics).
