That was my intial attempt before I realized that I needed a new blade. My garage was filled with smoke:) After that I decided to get a new circular saw and so far this Hitachi has been great! The way you're cutting several inches inside the board for a plunge cut, could you not just measure out the surrounding and cut out what you need for the same result? New to wood work btw

The benefit of this cut is cutting out holes in wood. For example, the opening for a sink or in this case I was making a big wooden polaroid frame. If you were going to use the inside shape for something though you are exactly right, you could just go ahead and cut it out. Hope this makes sense and good luck with your projects.
