Remember and do 5 rounds for the base and 5 rounds for the pom poms. so it will be nice and pom pom ish. also a lot of people who make these to sell do 6 rounds for the pom poms. 1 more tip.. if you spray it with warm water after you cut and trim it. Pop it in the dryer for 10min on warm it will fluff right up and look fab.

@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel

I have ried several times but I dont think they look nice. Its hard to keep all the fringe either to the front or back, best way is a one off large frame, but remember the bigger the blanket the more wool you will need.

I am a new subscriber, love you, glad I found you, making my loom this weekend, now to make a large blanket how to you put them together
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 7 жыл бұрын
You can sew them together but the don't look so good in my opinion. Also the bigger the blanket at some stage it will need washed and wool holds a huge amount of water therefor real hard to wash as usually the small blankets are popped into a pillowcase to be washed to help preserve the pom poms. Iv see bed runners made from long looms but none bed size. There is one video on youtube where the lady makes one on a DOOR yes she put nails all around an old flat door and made a blanket on that but goodness knows how she got it washed.

The dimensions are on the picture of the plan. If you pause the video you can write them down. You can make this loom any size you want as long as you follow the ODD and even ruling on the number of nails. EVEN number of nails down the 2 longes sides and an odd number of nails down the 2 shorter sides.

Hello! I’m trying to figure out how to make a frame 45 x 50. If I do 2.5 inch nail gaps there’s an even number on each side. Would I be better doing something like 40 x 47.5? Where there would be 16 nails and 19 nails. I was hoping for a rectangular shape.
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Chloe, 2.5 inches is too big a space you will need a huge amount of yarn to have it without looking like a net you would need to do at least 7 rounds and that would bee a lot of yarn. Almost all frames are 1.5 inch spacing and have even number on the long sides and odd on the shorter sides. This way patterns will work out proper. If you look on google and see some pictures of the rectangle ones count the nails or wooden doweling and make yours the same amount. That's the easiest way to get a rectangle, Chloe. Have fun and let me know how you get on Xxx

Hi Alison, great tutorial again. I was wondering if there is a reason the nails are 1 1/2 inches apart, could it be done with the nails 1 inch apart to give it more pom poms? I am thinking it may get fidderly, but I may give it a go. :-)
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 7 жыл бұрын
One inch pom poms are too small, and the smaller they are the more likely to fall to bits, especially if you intend to sell them. The last thing you want is to wash it and all the pom pom threads to fall out. I have made my loom with 1 inch apart but it is to do more diverse diagonals and non pom pom blankets. BUT I put color bits of plastic straw onto every other nail so I can still do pom pom blankets on it by just using the colored nails.. ( I haven't tested it out yet if you join my facebook group Craftytwunts and message me I will send you a picture of it ) The worst thing was the more nails the more likely for the wood to split. I split one side and had to replace it. But i was using 3 inch nails so I might have been better to use thinner and smaller nails but the smaller the nail the less wool they will hold. The only other option was to buy thicker batons but then the loom would have been heavier. I have an old wooden towel holder that has sturdy legs I was going to dismantle it and make a frame rather like an embroidery stand to hold my loom. hahahah

@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 3 күн бұрын
4 balls of either 50g or 100g all at the same time. You will have yarn left if you use 100g balls. if you make the bast a different color then you need 4 of the bast color and 4 of your pom pom color. A lot of people do 5 rounds on their pom poms to make them lush and thick.

My uncle made this frame for me but it turned out with 14 nails at top and bottom and 20 nails down the sides. He says the measurements should be 21.5 along top and bottom and 33 at the sides to allow for one more nail to go along sides if this helps anyone struggling with it :)
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 6 жыл бұрын
I am sorry he had to adjust his, I do say the WIDTH of the wood you use can cause different measurements. When you make the corner and start measuring, the width decides where the 1st corner nail goes. I put my first nail in the cross-section which was only half inch from the cut end. I measured my two inches down the batons. If you are using wider batons you might have 1 inch before the 1st corner nail. If you know what I mean. No one has ever said the struggled with it. This is the correct measurements for the width of wood iI used.

Thanks for replying. @AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel

Yes 14 nails top and bottom and 23 down the long sides will work. You have to have 2 sides odd and 2 sides even (including the corner nails) to be able to weave a full round here is my tutorial on making a frame. Remember to add flat metal corners plates on the back of the frame too. This will stop it twisting out of shape. kzbin.info/aero/PLrDyWXz56tb41XxScpZHvhmIpgmQwpCVE

can the spacing between the nails be 1 inch when making the loom or will it cause a problem when making the blanket? and is it always the smaller side that has the even numbers and the larger side having the odd set of number? i am thinking of making an extra large one.
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 7 жыл бұрын
I have an even number of nails on the long sides it works better if you plan to make pattern blankets without the pom poms. 1 inch is ok but you will have very small pom poms. Your blanket will take more wool and it will take much longer to tie.

@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 10 ай бұрын
Im not on fcebook anymore not for over 3 years. You would have to make a huge loom and it would take a massive amount of yarn. Measure across your bed and down the sides to where you want it to drape, then do the same from top to bottom of your bed that will give you the width and length of your batons you need. Space out your nails one and a half inches apart around your frame, you may have to add some support struts inside the frame to stop such a huge frame from twisting. make your frame then cut a few lengths to fit inside your frame and screw them to hold in place once you do your winding on remove the struts and tie it all up quickly before your frame warps out of shape

The same way you make the one in this video just keep marking along your batons until you get to the size you need. Sorry, I can't give specific sizes as everyone uses different wood. Make sure you keep the even number on the longer sides and odd on the shorter this works better for patterns if you intend to do the non pom pom blankets.

@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 8 жыл бұрын
if you work in inches then its 2 inches with 1 and a half inch left protruding if you use thicker wood then you can use 3 inch nails and leave 2 inch protruding. the more nail you have sticking up the more wool you can wined on. mind be careful not to split the wood by using nails that are too thick. Thank you for watching Im going to show you another use for the loom soon.

Do you have measurements for larger frames? Twin, full, queen and king?
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 3 жыл бұрын
They will take a HUGE amount of yarn to make that size. You need to measure the bed then make the frame. They don't look nice at all joined small together, I tried and the look vey untidy joining small one together. The biggest frame i have seen made was single bed size and it looked like a door frame.

How necessary is it to the blanket , that the frame have an odd number of nails on one side and even on the other? Will you not be able to make the blankets if it's even number all the way around?
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 5 жыл бұрын
You need the odd number side to get all the way around the nails. If you have an even number you will only get halfway around it won't wind back to the nail you started on. I made a mistake on my 1st loom and it took me ages to realise it was because of the number of nails. You can have as big a loom as you like as long as you have 2 odd-numbered sides and 2 even,

My husband has nails and wood we are off to B & Q for angle joints. He is going to add flat angles on the back to hold it more secure he is going to make me a bigger one for cots. P.S he says the 9th nail on the left side of frame is squint.... Just kidding hahahahahah

Ha ha I bet it is squint too. Ha ha ha tell him thank you for paying attention to it that means he watched it and im greatful that he did ( that will be 20 min of his life he wont get back hahahahahah) Tell him to make you an extra baton the size of the bottom and top one so you can adjust your cot frame to make pram blankets. Put angle joints on the extra pice and you can just screw it into the middle of your frame and easily take it off again when you want bigger ones. Thank you for taking the time to watch my tutorials xx

hi just wondered how you joined wood, is it screws into each join?
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 8 жыл бұрын
no I used the angle joints you could nail it for extra security if you want but be careful you don't split the wood. also If you watch the one with the adjustment bar you see I added corner triangles to hold it straight as sometimes it will buckle if you only use corner brackets on the inside and outside. You can use large metal flat corner angles on the back but i just used plywood from the back of an old picture, i just cut off the corners ha ha ha and screwed it onto the back of my frame. some people buy old big picture frames and use them. I hear they work well if its a good wooden frame from charity shops or car boot sales as long as the picture frame is rectangle as in tow long sides and short bottom and top or vice versa

Hi. I made my frame to the size you stated in this video 21.5 inches by 33 inches. When I came to puttin in the nails I only got 13 nails not 14. If I put 14 there will only be 1 and a 1/4 inches between nail 13 and 14. What have I done wrong?
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know the size is correct for the frame I made. Please remember if you are using diffrent thickness and width of wood you need to do what I did and line it up mark it then cut it. Mine is if I remember one and half inch wide if you are using diffrent width it wont be the same length as mine. You need to do the marking of HALF the width of your wood at the corner joint area then mark 1 and half from there. If you know what I mean. If you watch the begining of the tutorial again where I line the wood together to form the corner and how I mark it. I do state cut the length after you mark how many nails you want on it. As many people make diffrent sizes.

Thanks for your reply. Ok I need to rebuy the wood. If I get 1.5 inch thick timber at 21.5 inches x 31 inches that should work?

@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 6 жыл бұрын
buy longer lengths It doesn't matter how wide yours is as long as you put that line down the middle of all the bits then put 2 together to form the corner then mark your one and half inches from the cross point at the corner lines. THEN cut once you have marked out the number of nails you want. I marked and measured then I cut the length.

Can I ask how many balls of 100g double knit wool in total does it take to make a blanket that size please?
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 7 жыл бұрын
8 balls I now use 4 x 100g for the base and 4 x 100g balls for the pom poms it give a much better blanket. The amount of wool used depends on the size of the loom. with this one I had about 25g left of each ball. I made a slightly smaller loom to fit an everyday standard pram top and I was left with 50g each ball. A lot of people use 50g balls and just use it all up but its easier and cheaper for me to buy 100g balls, Not many shops around me do 50g balls. Also join this facbook wool selling group. Tell John I sent you. I now get my wool from John if you are in the UK his delivery is only £2.85 depending on the amount off wool you buy and he has wool from £1 a 100g ball some is even cheaper when he sells it in packs. I don't buy from anywhere else now unless John doesn't have it. Ordering from him is cheaper than going to the shops hahah. facebook.com/groups/1179878322051275/ I highly recommend him and I don't get anything for recommending him I do it because his wool is fab and at a good low price.

I have tried but not very successful as the joining poms are either too far apart and didn't look symmetrical or are too close together. I cut the fringe off down one side of each blanket to the pom pom but it didn't work it didn't look good at the back either, best thing is to make a big loom.

Do you mean standard measurements I use the old imperial inches. Every time I try to make a loom, no matter what type of wood I use, once I start hammering in the nails, my wood splits... What am I doing wrong?!
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 7 жыл бұрын
OH no... Try theses tips if you haven't already. If you have a drill, drill a small pilot hole for each nail first. TURN YOUR NAIL POINT UP, AND GIVE THE SHARP POINT 2 TAPS WITH YOUR HAMMER This blunts the nail so it will squash the fibers of the wood rather than split it. ( I found this out after I made this video ) Tapping the nail blunt is a big tip used by many woodworkers to help stop wood from splitting. If you are very handy or know someone who is. Drill holes halfway down into your buttons where the nails should be and use wooden dowel rods about 6 inches tall. Gently tap the doweling rods into each hole and you will have a light weight frame like the one I now use. I hope this helps. If anyone out there has made a nail frame if you want to change it to wooden dowels all you have to do is replace the nail with wooden doweling, but you have to drill a straight hole halfway into your wooden button.
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 7 жыл бұрын
If you drill a pilot hole for the nails only drill a quarter of the way in to give the nail a head start. Blunt the point of the nail as described in my other reply. this should help immensely with your splitting problem.

@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel
@AlisonRussellsCrochetChannel 7 жыл бұрын
The biggest sort of frame I have seen was a lady on youtube used an old living room door. Yes, she put nails all around the door to make a single bed size. If you make small ones and sew them together they don't look so good. You can sew them but in my opinion, they never match up well. Also the bigger the blanket the heavier it will be to wash as wool takes a huge amount of water. It would take a huge amount of wool to make a big blanket.
