All I want is a proper cup of coffee, made with a proper copper coffee pot. I may be off my dot but I want a proper coffee in a proper copper pot. Iron coffee pots and tin coffee pots, they are no use to me. If I can’t have a proper cup of coffee in a proper copper coffee pot I’ll have a cup of tea. Edit: From memory, surprised I got it XD

This piece is my favorite I must say. I really love teapots and this one is just beautiful ! I was wondering if you intend to throw these with porcelaine instead of stonewear ? I find the recent white vases that you made really accentuate your work on straight edges and simple geometrical shapes (which i love). Hope to see more of this and big thanks for showing your craft on youtube !

I wonder... ever make a tealight based tea brewing pot? It's a stand you can drop a tealight into and a small tea pot with water on top of. You light the candle and after a while the water is hot enough to brew tea.

I actually thought that your maker's mark was a Norse 'Os' rune... I'm not very observant apparently! This is also the first time I've ever noticed that the teapot I've had for years, supposedly from a potter selling on Etsy, has no maker's mark anywhere on it. Oddly, the teacups that match it do have one, though it's very complicated and hard to make out in detail. Your straightforward, clear F is much easier to recognize and identify.

At 48:00 I half-expected the teapot to crack and spill water everywhere, followed by “oops” in the same calm tone as the rest of the video and an abrupt end. I’m glad it survived, but imagining such an anti-climactic end to a nearly hourlong video representing months of work just tickled me

I'm back to say thank you so much for making this detailed video about the whole process. I'm wondering now how different the porcelain will look--both process-wise and as the finished piece. Maybe you can do a side-by-side comparison of throwing the same(ish) form in both types of clay and talk about the differences. Like I've said before, I'm a visual learner, and I'd love to see the comparisons. Thank you so much for making these videos! Happy new year!

I'm a beginner potter and I just need to ask... I can see in the finished teapot (that you made tea in) there is alot of "crazing" I thinks its called ... the tiny cracks. Firstly I'm guessing this was intentional but I thought if it had these cracks it's no longer food safe?
@floriangadsby11 ай бұрын
Here’s a good link to an article that goes into more depth about it, ceramicartsnetwork.org/ceramics-monthly/ceramics-monthly-article/Techno-File-Dirty-Dishes, and clears up some of the misconceptions that are spread around. As long as you properly wash crazed pottery there is no bacteria left in the crackles. As long as you take time to care for your handmade ceramics after they’ve been used then they’ll be just fine, but of course it does depend on the materials used and temperatures fired to. I’ve been using crackle glazed ceramics for years. My pots are highly fired stoneware with nothing nasty that could leech, the crackling doesn’t stain too badly as long as it’s properly washed but of course it happens overtime. To the same degree, many of the potters I’ve worked for over the years who wood fire, soda fire and so on, all have work that crazes and crackles to some degree and it all stains with time, yet functional work is still made abundantly and is completely usable. I saw this in Japan especially, with so many functional tableware pieces that were crackled/crazed and stained and no body blinks an eye, nor do you hear of an excessive amount of people getting ill. My clay is fully vitrified after being fired to 1300ºC and unless you take terrible care of your ceramics you’ll be perfectly healthy. Other clays, like earthenware, never fully vitrify and will absorb water if not glazed properly, that can be issue. For industrial use it could be a problem, due to the surface of the pot having less strength, long-term staining with use and fragility, as it’s high fired stoneware packed full of iron, which makes it weaker and more susceptible to chipping on the whole, but that’s what you get with handmade ceramics, I don’t want to make pots that have perfect, uniform surfaces like you might find in a shop, I want each to be individual and interesting and handmade and I suppose the same goes for the generations of potters who’ve worked all over the world. I think certain parts of the world, I won’t say which, seem to have a fixation on this. And of course it is the potter’s responsibility to provide surfaces that are food safe, but in most cases that applies to the leaching of toxic materials, not staining itself. Hot dishwater water and soak will kill anything in the crackles, and they are gaping crevices in bacterial terms. Anyway, I hope this helps!

I just recently discovered your channel, and I've been binging your videos ever since. They are really fantastic, as is your pottery. You manage to make it look easy, but at the same time the sheer skill and years of experience come through in so many ways - and the narration does a fantastic job of explaining techniques and choices while supplementing the video beautifully. This really makes me want to try my hand at pottery myself (my makerspace has a pottery workshop, though it's constantly crowded), though no doubt I would fail miserably. Still, you've really made me appreciate pottery in a way I never have. (Btw, the only negative about these videos is that your narration is so damn pleasant to listen to that I can get really sleepy.)

Extremely detailed step by step. Not once do I recollect a shilling for a like or subscribe. The only thing I would change is a slightly louder narrating voice. Hopefully when glazed they may look ok but the level of finesse that you show can only come with time, effort, repetition and an understanding of how clay and glazes marry to achieve such beautiful pots.
