Nice work Shawn. There are plenty of videos of guys flint knapping or building traditional bows and there is nothing wrong with that but, it's refreshing to see a channel with more depth to it.

Definitely interesting and informative. Does get me thinking about other uses for linen though. You never really see real linen used for fabrics anymore.

I'm going to order some flax seeds for this spring now! IDK if its historically accurate but I make my bottom loop bigger and my top one stays on the nock, that way it stays on the bow when I set it in the corner.

what does your house look like? because you have bundles of flax, bow staves, arrow shafts, hides, and sinew drying. do you have a huge workshop?

Great video! By the way, I remember that beeswax is also used in sewing to make fabric waterproof. Did you ever try using it on your sinew strings too?

Although I'd like to go more traditional somewhere down the line; for the time being, my _definition of primitive archery_ is me still using my 21 year old compound bow.

I might try this with nettles. I made cordage years ago from some, surprised me with how strong it was.

I like the string. Why not do a reverse twist to the string when your making it? Might be stronger too?

Thats pretty kickbutt there guy. I have done this with Yucca{aka Spanish dagger} here in Texas. I did not know flax was a fiber producer, so good stuff.

Shawn you would make the ancients proud, great video & well informative, your pretty good with that set up to, ya know they say the 1st use of the bow & arrow started around 64,000 to 71,000 years ago in south Africa, & the early evidence of the b & a in Asia & I think all those who came across the barren straight (after the paleoman came across the Atlantic) had use of the bow &

Good vid, man. Useful stuff. Gonna plant some seeds in the upcoming spring. Flax fibers seem to do the job. My best natural candidate (out of those available to me) for this job was nettle fibers. Now I'm gonna try flax too. Thanks again bro. Greetz.

why single ply? Two ply cordage would be even stronger. And where did you get the flax seeds?

i bought some natural hemp fibre from a craft store it looks like a string. i braided 3 strands together and its incredible strong i havent had one break on me yet on my longbow. and its only 1/8 inch thick

Another great addition! I really enjoy how you show from the beginning to the end of your processes. Was the vine Maple easier to work with stone tools then the Yew?

How does flax perform in water? I'm wondering if I could theoretically make fishing line or fishing nets with it.

Kimberly Cabanas, if you dip it in hot liquid pine or birch resin it will work. They used resin for boats/ships, rope, etc back in the day.

Jeremy Briggs, then you can just as well use animal sinew that'll be stronger and last longer.

Hey Shawn, great video. Have you found any source material for native peoples shooting bare handed? I can imagine someone shooting a low poundage bow without protection but a 70-75 bow must be painful for quite a while.

Ryan Gunnison yeah sinew works really well, it's a good strong string, but if it gets too wet it can go a bit rubbery and be hard to work with :)

I do agree though primitive skills will be essential but also don't forget we have learned better and more efficient ways to do things just because it's primitive does not always mean better in all situations keep ur eyes on the future but never forget the past

Yes and no. Hemp (marijuana) is incredibly strong, but what you can legally obtain is poor quality and will not be anywhere as strong.

Northern Woodsman European hemp has no psychoactive effects and is just as strong.
