Making a leg prosthesis is a complex process that requires not only craftsmanship but also extensive medical and anatomical knowledge.
Peter Ferger from APT-Prothesen in Westerwald is a master orthopedic technician. He provides prostheses to people with amputations and also looks after athletes on the German national team, most recently at the Paralympics in Tokyo in 2021.
The heart of every prosthesis is the socket. It connects the body to the prosthesis and is manufactured individually for each user. In a purely manual process, a trial socket is first made of plastic, and in the next step the actual socket is made of lightweight but stable carbon fiber. When the customer can move well with the finished prosthesis, that is the most beautiful moment of his craftsmanship for Peter Ferger every time.
