This is why I became a patrion member recently. I will be building a wooden tank for my first katana build. I figured it would not be too complicated, but I needed that extra confidence I get from watching your videos. Thanks.

Walter, you are absolutely priceless. =) One of these days when I've got a home of my own with a garage I'm going to outfit myself a knife/sword making shop and I will send you one of my blades for grading, solely because I want to see you critique it the same way you narrate all of your videos! lol

To get a Waterproof Seal, I use Brushable Hydroseal. It is basically a Bitumen Product that is able to be applied with a Paint Brush. A really cheap one because you will dispose of it once used. You could try cleaning the brush but I have found the effort it takes to clean the Brush is offset by the One Dollar or less it costs. Just a suggestion.

could you quench in oil with this design? fire may be an issue, but maybe someone with experience knows better?

im just getting into knife making i learned something,most vids use oil to quench,so can i just use water. on normal carbon steel.good sub and respect from the uk.

It depends on the steel, some steels need to be hardened by oil. Hardening with water is more risky since it can cause the blade to crack.

How do people make those heat treated disighns that make the knife black with white wavy lines?could you possibly make a video on that if you know what I'm talking about?

That is called "Hamon," Walter has a dvd dedicated to nothing but claying and polishing blades--I highly recommend buying it, it was pivotal to my own work.
@ScuffedEngineer10 жыл бұрын
It's either the Hamon you're talking about or the steel itself which is Damascus

i have made a knife but when i have hardend it is it not hard
@kendaniels735110 жыл бұрын
It is probably low carbon steel...this will make hardening pretty much impossible. You should also try tempering the steel after you go through the hardening phase. This entails putting the blade in an oven at 400 degrees for one hour....do this twice, letting it air cool between treatments. This may help but no promises. Good luck.

The type of steel he uses takes water to quench, it all depends on the steel.

With the price of wood these days that tank is probably over $100
