Thanks man, I appreciate the tip. Just popped it loose under my '05 focus zx4 using this method. Wasn't a whole lot of room to work with, took me about 2 mins though. Lot to learn from crafty people like Randy. May he rest in peace.

I have an oil wrench, but it was too small for the filter on the old van I was working on. This trick got it off with no hassle, no busted knuckles, and no swear words! Thanks for the tip.

Use this method on my 03 dodge ram today didn't have the room of a motorcycle so I couldn't use the ratchet but just the extension helped. Was still quite tuff but worked thanks a lot! Also use caution if you cannot see, not to twist any nearby wires when tightening the bandana.

Thanks for posting this, somehow when I moved my oil filter wrench went was lost and I was caught in the middle of an oil change today without it. I used a handkerchief instead and it worked and I was able to finish the oil change. Thanks again

I confidently started my oil filter change knowing that I own one of those filter wrenches with the chain. Now I'm stuck looking for a DIY solution because the bloody filter is so close to the engine block, and it is after hours! Modified the idea. I had an old frayed tie down strap, did not have space to twist that much. I slipped a sheet of sand paper underneath the strap to make up for the lack force and it worked a treat!

Where there is a will there is a way. I used an old braided belt on a used car I bought. I wrapped it around the filter nice and tight placed the belt needle in a hole. Pulled left and it came loose. Unscrewed the rest by hand. Never put a wrench when replacing a filter. Hand tight only. That's all you need making sure it's snug. Using a wrench can cause a leak. Guys put to much pressure with a wrench. The can moves but the gasket stays and that's when it tears away from the can.

My dad's best friend when I was young was a man named Randall, and he was killed while doing what he loved - restoring classic cars. This was the early 80s, and most of your everyday folks/backyard mechanics didn't use proper supports. Hell, there wasn't much in the way of safety during those times in general! He was crushed under a car. I just about teared up when you did your dedication. Also, very ingenuitive idea ya have there! That'll definitely come in handy!

Hey buddy nice tip!!! In case someone put it the wrong way, an easy fix would be to twist the socket extension one more half turn so that the wrench ends up facing the other way ;)

Okay I kind of tried this way and it didn't work for me I ended up having to put a screwdriver through my oil filter but through trial-and-error I found it the best way as far as if it's going to come off via not resorting to the screwdriver way I make sure it's long enough that goes all the way through the oil filter if you use a screwdriver anyhow you know those black rubberized bungee straps I used one of those I stretched it around the filter pulled it tight and wrapped it around itself like a bread tie then grab the area where it was wrapped around like a handle and turn the oil filter it only move just a little bit but that's all you need a little bit at a time and then turn around its off I just figured I'd throw that in there because the rubberized bungee grips the whole oil filter

I accidentally modified the technique slightly because i screwed it up at first but after the first mistake, this way took like 0 seconds flat: loop the folded bandana around the filter, half-tie it, put the socket wrench (with the extender already on) on that half-knot, half tie that, twist it a couple times and wrench. (if twisting one way doesn't work out for orientation+leverage, the other way should)
