Ever wonder 'what is a receiving blanket?" A receiving blanket often gets confused with a swaddling blanket. The swaddle is usually larger in size (47 x 47 inches), while the receiving blanket is usually used for newborns and measures 30 x 30 inches.This method will work for either size! Make a baby blanket that best serves the baby you'll be giving it to.

Hi Kimberly, :) I just completed the baby blanket made from this tutorial. I made changes because I wanted mine to be wider and longer so I did 8" squares in 5 baby prints, all flannel with an adorable animal ark flannel backside. I quilted some fancy stitches about 5 inches apart to it for a good hold and finished it off with a decorative edging stitch. it really came out so so adorable and perfect for a little boy I'm giving it too! Thank you for sharing! :)

It looks very easy to do! I'm new to quilting. I sew mostly little girl clothes for my little lady. My mum still keeps my baby quilted blanket made for me and gifted to her when I was born 28 years ago! I'm going to try making this for a friend who's having a baby shower in two weeks. This may be a Silly question, but when you stich in the ditch, does the stitch show on 5h back.and what size stitch would I use,for the ditch
@FatQuarterShopTX
@FatQuarterShopTX 8 ай бұрын
Hello Josephine! Stitching in the ditch is basically top stitching. It will show on the top and the bottom of the quilt it is just that you are sewing next to the seams so that it is less noticeable. Stitch length is what you want it to be, but since it will not show as much a regular sewing length is fine. You don’t typically want it extra small or large.

Hello Simply Michee! The backing fabric and batting needs to be a few inches larger than the quilt top to accommodate the shifting that can happen during quilting. Here's a good example on a mini sample: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnjMeqqaZ9Cfe80

Hi Jayne! This project could very easily be converted to a precut friendly project. The squares for the top measure 7” so you could either use a regular charm pack that measures 5” and make a smaller quilt or add an additional row making it a little larger. Also, Riley Blake now has 7” squares! Feel free to visit our charm pack page for a variety of options! www.fatquartershop.com/charm-packs/where/fabric-manufacturer/riley-blake-designs-fabric Hope this helps, good luck!

I know I'm late to the party and it's a sideways question, but I'm in the UK and it's not a term we use so I just looked up to see what a 'receiving' blanket is. The consensus of opinion is that it's either just a light weight cellular blanket so baby doesn't overheat, in which case most people thought it should just be called a blanket, OR it is muslin squares used for burbing cloths and other slightly messy receiving purposes. So in light of my research, why is this pretty quilted piece called a receiving blanket?
@lauriepreston4262
@lauriepreston4262 5 жыл бұрын
Jacquie, receiving blankets are primarily used for newborns and young infants because they are small, soft and lightweight. When you bring them home from the hospital, you often use a "receiving" blanket; i.e. you are receiving your baby. Of course, they're good for many uses throughout a young child's life.

I believe the precision comes from cutting accurately to begin with, having a 1/4" foot with a guide and pinning. If you do those three things, your quilt tops will be more straight and accurate overall.

Hello Peter! A receiving blanket is a baby quilt that is traditionally gifted to newborns. It's usually very thin with no batting.

What fabric type do you use for the back?
@FatQuarterShopTX
@FatQuarterShopTX 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristine! You can use any fabric you like! We recommend using something from the same collection so it matches, but a Cuddle (minky fabric) would also be great and it's sew soft!
