If you’ve ever set up a microphone only to find that the signal is too quiet, you might need a boost! This video compares 4 popular microphone signal boosters along with everything you need to know about how to use them to sound your best!
I personally think these are all outstanding options (that’s why I own them), but if I had to pick a favorite it would be the FetHead simply because of the versatility that comes with being able to connect it directly to your mixer or interface.

One thing to watch out for when connecting any of these is the length of cable between the mic and the mixer/interface. If your cable is introducing any noise, the booster will also boost that noise. The closer to the mic, the better.

As a new sound guy, I just bought the PodMic w/ an Audiobox Go to connect it to my computer. And only after I noticed that the output of the mic was basically 0, I had to put my audio interface all the way to 50 to be able to hear something but then the other issue is that you get an horrible hiss in the background. So guys if you buy this combo (or with the focusrite solo) you'll most likely need one of these as well (I personally fell for the Fethead Germanium as it is very good and still under a 100 euros in france)

I grabbed the Klark teknik one for $30 off amazon. I got into my audio chain; GoXLR Mini with a Rode Podmic...huge difference. I was pumping 65db of gain without the booster with a 10db makeup gain on the compressor. Now I have 55db gain with 0db make up gain on the compressor. Now with much more head room, I can make better tweaks to my mic. While you where right about it not fitting into audio interfaces directly, I made it work with what I had on hand. The price to performance is a great value. Thanks for making this video. Great content has always.

For budgetary reasons, I went with the Klark Teknik mic booster CM-1 (works GREAT with my PodMic). Though it isn't in-line, the $26 I paid last week to buy it used on ebay means that the extra little patch cable was still well within budget and it works AWESOME for my rode PodMic! :) SO MUCH less noise

A great option for the sm7b or any dynamic mic is the dbx 286A it's an older model but it sounds fantastic, it is a rack unit though, but it has a mic preamp, compressor, noise gate and a EQ(low & high) 80hz high pass and 48v phantom power all built in. I found mine used for $40 on marketplace.

There is a version of the FetHead that delivers phantum power to your mic too. It's called the FetHead Phantom. It costs twelve Euros more. The normal FetHead clocks in at 63€. Why you want it? There are older condensor mics around that sound incredible but have a farely low signal output.

This is super helpful! I have an (unused) PodMic due to low signal level through Scarlett 2i2, and this answered lots of questions about options for more gain from the mic. I have the Klark Teknik CT-1 myself, it works perfectly for my dynamic mic and the build quality is solid and heavy for a small item. I see no reason why people getting into xlr mics should spend more than 30-40 bucks for a mic BOOSTER (aside from stockout issues) as arguably all of the boosters shown by Tom here does not affect the sound quality. Really, it's just a booster guys use that money saved into something else like the mic itself or a decent stand. Cheers 🤙

Ok as a regular listener I think we need to institute a 'PUN TAX' - as you know I'm old so when I bought my cloudlifter back when that all there was. I've purchased a dozen over the years and to my knowledge they never failed. A little story for you I went into a studio here in Nashville and tested about 60 mics with my voice. The best Mic was the almost as expensive as my first new car a Neumann mic. But since podcasting doesn't make money and it's stupid to plug a $1000+ mic into a Rodecaster the Mic that best for ME was the Rode Procaster (the Pod Mic's bigger brother). I want to try the new Earthworks ETHOS but I doubt I'll switch. I do run it through a Cloudlifter because lets face it the pre-amps on the Rodecaster are not the best. If I run something into my computer I use my Sound Devices Mic pre 6 ii which has much better pre-amps and something I don't use the Cloudlifter. If I'm traveling light (just my M1-iPad) I have an Earthworks ICON USB that plugs into my iPad

Luckily there is cheaper alternative than the cloud lifter, ordered the Klark Teknik. Podmic+Evo4+My voice is no go for Final Cut Pro voiceover work. I need to go very close to the mic with 100% gain. and still apply max +12dB gain on FCPX. Hope the Klark Teknik will fix that once it arrives. Thanks for these videos.

@@tombuck Tom, just got RodeCaster Pro delivered yesterday. Have you ever directly connected a 3.5mm mic (like the Rode NTG) directly into the XLR connections in back of RodeCaster Pro? Found RODE VXLR, XLR Pro, and XLR Plus adapters for this. Though not sure if I need to convert 48v phantom power down to 4-volt for this to work properly. Actually want Rode NTG mic to power up when I power up RodeCaster Pro. Any feedbacks appreciated….trying to save $ and not buy another Mic with XLR connection.

The other point is that if your mic is too quiet, especially with the SM7B, it might be that you have to remember to get really up close and intimate with the mic. This for me took some time to get used to staying close to the mic.

Js its probably better to try and put the boosters as close to the microphone as possible in the signal chain. so if using the fethead you should try and plug it into your mic rather than into the interface. This is because otherwise any interference picked up along the xlr cable will be boosted by the fethead. if you plug it in to the mic then the interference will be picked up after the signal and won't be boosted so will be comparatively quiter. XLR cables are balanced but even still best practice is to have these added on the microphone side.
@JadeNeoma
@JadeNeoma Жыл бұрын
this actually might be why the other ones deliberately made themselves not fit into an interface. Especially the clark may have worried that people woul.d think its gain is less clean if it was plugged directly into an interface

Great video! I am using the SE DM1 Dynamite for my Podmic/Rodecaster Pro set up. It touts +28dB of clean gain. It also fits into the RCP, like the Fethead. Comes in at the Fethead price range, too. ($99) I also have a Klark Teknik CT1. I got mine for $35, I think. I definitely prefer the DM1 over the CT1, but for the price, it's hard to argue the value. My gain is set to 6 with the DM1 and I can hover around the unity mark, depending on what I'm doing. (Teams meetings, it can go north, but I record with it right around there.)

I used this stuff from Amazon: geni.us/letterremover? It's intended to remove vinyl letters from fabrics. I wore gloves and put A LOT of it on the logo and waited a few minutes for it to start peeling/crackling. Then I put more on it and used an alcohol wipe to rub it off. A regular cloth can damage the fabric and a paper towel will shred really quickly, so an alcohol wipe works best. Don't be scared to use a lot of the solvent as long as you're using gloves for safety. I repeated on the 3 remaining logos and now you can't even tell they were ever there 👍

I'm so glad it was helpful! I haven't used the Wave XLR myself, so I can't speak to it specifically. I also don't use a ton of plugins, but I do use some of the EQ options on my Rodecaster pretty often. What I've found best for things like noise gates is to use a very light touch. I typically start by making a change until it seems noticeable, and then backing it off a bit.

Any ideas? I had a yamaha mg10xu that pushed condensers and dynamic mics HARD well below half gain, its kind of unreal these 500-800$ mixers honestly kind of suck... I will wait for post-christmas time, for electronics buying.. About China..these Klark stuff, is about 4.6 out of 5star..very, very good i think! If, there is a brand, with European quality standards client demand, i can buy it. ..After long time cheap was their "how-to" do stuff, to catch west, i think they are in "do with best quality" mode on now.. they will have to partner with some recognized brand, to launch products..but if it is good, i can buy it, if tested by someone.. The chinese phones are a good example..they are right there! And, it has prevented some brands to go crazy with prices..so, at least, we give it a chance.. Nice one, Tom! I have to listen better again.. I tested it only once, and unless it is past midnight, with low outside noise, i will need them .
