I think what you've created is a semi successful experiment. Now anyone that wants to do the same has a great starting point....really just need a quieter pump and it would be a lot more usable. Personally I'm not sure I'd want water at my table, but it is tempting for an epic showcase encounter. Thanks for the shout out.
@WylochsArmory7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it really boils down to being a showcase piece. But now I'm thinking about some sort of contained feature. Something sci-fi. Perhaps a long, clear tube; dye the water green and only fill it enough so you can see it flowing through the pipe. Like a promethium factory or something.

This sums up my opinion. I probably wouldn't use it, even with a quieter pump, at my regular game table. There are already enough things to spill on character sheets, and I have cats. But in a controlled setting, as a showcase, it'd be pretty awesome with a quieter pump. It's also nice just as a terrain piece. Plenty of places to put minis, and a neat addition to an encounter. I occasionally build huge things like that for convention games. I'm not gonna spend 20 hours building something for one encounter. (Okay, yes I will. But I try not to.) But for a game I get to run for different people several times, it's totally worth it.

I think I really like the idea of using some flowing liquid contained in an encased tube or something. That would be awesome, and less stressful at the table.

try a pet (drinking) fountain pump, they are usually very quiet(we only notice ours when it's sucking air because it's low) they are normally 12v pumps driven by a 120v transformer, but nothing a crafter can't get around(and only around 10-15 last time we replaced it)

I used to have something like this that I picked up at a yard sale except it was a castle with a mote and a fairly quiet pump and a mist maker with color changing lights that sat at the bottom of the mote. Friend of mine ended up with it. Never used it in game but it was pretty awesome just sitting in the room while we gamed as a piece to just help set the tone/mood.

I just discovered your vids. I'll be checking more of them out. When you go looking for a pump, I think you'll want an "impeller" type. It works sorta the way a fan moves air. A diaphragm or piston type pump is noisy because of the oscillating parts. An impeller just spins. Thanx for a great tutorial. Looking forward to seeing more.

Nice little build. To get away from the noisy pump, perhaps you could use the same foam build, but use a submersible fish tank filter unit in the 5 to 10 gallon size. The only difference in the build is in making the bottom pool deep enough to make sure the filter intake grid stays completely underwater. The cost will be a bit higher, but you wing up with a /quiet/ unit that doesn't eat batteries.
@WylochsArmory7 жыл бұрын

if you want cheap tubing, just go to a pet shop and buy airline tubing for fish tanks (you can get several feet for a couple bucks). you might have to refit it like with the straw (they're close to the same width as straws), but the benefit is that it's way more flexible than the straw, and also sturdier
@boovaher7 жыл бұрын
Love it. I would have used a hot air gun to round the sharp edges and add texture though. And consider bathroom grout slurry as a finish. It comes coloured and can be used as gap fill, in the place of paint for colour, adds detail and waterproofs.

I drew up blueprints to build a whole table with a cliffside on the north end of it, intending to build a waterfall into it to fall into a pool below but give the illusions that it was flowing into a river, however the river is resin. The pool goes to a pump that pushes it right back to the top of the waterfall. The rest of the land is a battlefield. But you can still make use of the cliff and under. It seems fine in theory to me but I will have to find a quiet pump. I got one in a box of fishtank filters with a tank but I haven't gotten around to trying it yet. lol

I LOVE THIS!! Now I'm not gonna lie, I think I'm gonna stick with a hot glue/Fake Water water fall for the game, but a coffee table display, or book case shelf scene with this and some other pieces would look killer! that way, if when the game is done for the day or whatever, you still get a living scene. pared with some live succulents or air plants and it would look AMAZING.
