A hint for those making fancy dress or want fast pleating. Buy narrow curtain heading tape intended for pleated curtains, sew it onto the waist and just pull the strings. Instant, fast, cartridge pleats without the hours of running stitch. Wouldn't use on proper historical clothing but have used for children's fancy dress clothing.

Definitely extremely useful for petticoats! Too bulky and not nice enough for outer layers though in my experience, since the curtain heading tape is rather stiff by itself. It definitely depends on the thickness of the main fabric too though. The great thing is that I have quite a bit of this tape left over since I have tons of cheap thrifted curtains and many of them come with this tape.

Amazing video! Definitely one of the better tutorials out there. A little addition from my own experience (and from other videos I've seen): I find it easiest to attach the waistband by sandwiching it and the pleats together in one hand (instead of holding the waistband above the pleats like you did here), that way I can work way faster and get neater, less visible stitches. Cartridge pleating has honestly become one of my absolute favorite "wind-down" activities and my favorite sewing activity, period. It's such a beautifully meditative and _satisfying_ process (just look at these neatly stacked rows!), especially the part where I lovingly attach each pleat to the waistband. I've made circle skirts before and I love that fit too, but every time I try to plan another sewing project like a top, circle skirt or something else entirely, I just end up making another cartridge pleated skirt, lol. Gathering is nice enough and especially fast, but it just doesn't hit that spot quite like cartridge pleating lol. I added some simple smocking embroidery to the pleats of my latest skirt - not just for looks but also so the pleats stay neatly in place through use and washes - and it's my favorite thing I've ever made. I've gotten so many compliments on it already asking if it was a traditional folk skirt, and it gives me the happy chemicals every time I say "thanks, I made it myself!" I think I may have been possessed by the spirit of a victorian smock-maker lmao.

Definitely the best cartridge pleating tutorial on KZbin! I’ve been struggling doing this technique on a 16th century gown, and this video was so helpful!

I have a cosplay I've been planning on making for at least 18 months now (it's still in my head) and this style of petticoat would be brilliant under it, especially if it had a really deep lace hem.

I can highly recommend at least trying it out once. It takes a bit of time, but it's an easy, meditative process. The feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction you get when you pull the threads and attach them to the waistband one by one is second to none. But be careful! If you're like me, you'll never want to do any other kind of pleat ever again.

That was very insightful. I have head of cartridge pleating and even seen it used a few times. I had never actually seen how it was attached to a waist band though. Thanks for this tutorial. Might I suggest a thimble for future projects to protect your finger while making all those glorious pleats?

I'm gonna make a cosplay on my favourite book character, which is historicalish fantasy style, and then proudly wear it everyday. I have about five meters of very lightweight navy blue wool. I would also add a drop lining, not sure if it would be a full circle or a half circle

Here she falls in love with prince disguised as a travelling musician but curves him due to a curse that her evil Fairy Godmother put on her, and thus her Journey begins... She would endure every kind of magical adventure, like being captured by a giant or messing with fairies in magical forest, but eventually she marries the prince

hi Daisy. thank you for this visual explanation of cartridge pleats. In my minds eye, I can see using a hem or seam joiner or faggoting to avoid so much time, and going for the look but not the actual stitching performance. My fashion fabric will be pleated your way though. If I wanted to increase the bottom width to 4 panels, should the depth of pleats be larger? (The waist staying the same length). If I sample this out as a crinoline, could channeling be st on and boning added later or not at all? I love your multi usage in garments, it’s a costumers dream lol. Take care! ps i just had a knee replacement on my left knee now, so I am using my down time to work through some issues, ie; cartridge pleating, fourchettes- you know the little details lol. Happy new year!
@DaisyViktoria
@DaisyViktoria 3 жыл бұрын
So glad you enjoyed it! You can change the size of the pleats, or you can also just sew them more tightly squished together onto the waistband - and you can play with it to see how you like it! You can wear this over a crinoline! The crinoline itself is usually patterned with a more gradient flare for the boning. I hope your knee recovers well and you have lots of fun projects to get you through!

Is that simple stitch through each pleat to the waistband enough to keep it secure (especially if you have thicker or heavier fabric), or is it a good idea to reinforce the stitches?

I was all about making one of these until you said 5-6 times your waistline measurement for fabric 😳 I’m currently in the process of getting healthy but imagine making one right now as a size 20 would be super heavy
@DaisyViktoria
@DaisyViktoria 2 жыл бұрын
The taffeta I used here is so lightweight, I think it would be a good choice! We've done these with some of my friends in larger sizes too, and the taffeta seems pretty good for the low weight. You can experiment with using less fabric too, if you find you prefer that, you may just have pleats that aren't spaced as tightly. Getting healthy is always such a good goal, and I hope that no matter what size that journey means for you, that you can experience a fun and beautiful skirt!

Take your hands out of the pockets. If you are going to make a replica gown, don’t add pockets. What is so important that you need to carry any where?
@DaisyViktoria
@DaisyViktoria 2 ай бұрын
Hi! You are welcome to make your skirt without pockets if you prefer! It's actually even easier, as you can skip the slits and simply sew the side seams all the way up. Depending on what gown you want to replicate, you may or may not need pockets!
