I have used fabric and lace before. Once you put the resin on it, the fabric and lace become saturated and darken quite a bit. White lace pretty much disappears under resin. It does create a unique look. The bail should glue on fine, just still use E6000.

I have also found that this reduces glare, although it can be really hard to get rid of all the glare (I think it just comes with the territory of this medium). I will add to our to-do list a glass tile pendant video, it's a great idea!

Thanks for taking the time to show us how to make these pendants. I've seen them at craft shows and was always fascinated by the glass look of the resin. Neat to see it's possible to make them myself!

I would suggest laying an entire new layer of resin over the entire surface to even out any uneven areas and then putting it back under the UV light. If you just put a little in one area, it will create a line and look uneven and almost lumpy.

I also really like how Ice Resin in particular looks: the crystal clear glass like finish it gets, relatively few bubbles, and how easily it domes. Although I do sometimes have a bad pour (we all do) I feel like I can pretty much count on Ice Resin turning out the way I want it to, and for me, that is priceless.

I have tried using fabric with mixed results. The fabric absorbs the glue and the resins - which results in it darkening. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does change the look of the piece. I am a huge fan of experimenting, so I would suggest playing around with the idea and seeing what happens.
@beadaholique12 жыл бұрын
Hi! I find that the 2 part resins dome a little better then the 1 part. Although you can dome them it is more difficult, and if you are using a UV light for curing, it means you will need to move your piece which can be a little scary when doming. I have found that it is ok to use either 1 part resin or 2 part resin indoors as long as it is properly ventilated.
@beadaholique12 жыл бұрын
Unless something says that it is fine to use, is copyright free, is specifically made for commercial use, or is of an age where the copyright has expired, you can probably assume that someone somewhere holds the copyright.
@beadaholique11 жыл бұрын
I can only speak from my personal observations but I find UV resin is actually harder to work with because you loose control of it once it goes under the UV lamp. I have had several instances where a bubble appears during the curing process and I can't do anything about it. I also find the 2-part resin domes better and is better for thicker layers.
@beadaholique13 жыл бұрын
@Beadaholique The stickers give the appearance of resin but they do not require any drying time. You will need to wait for the glue to dry when you adhere the image/sticker to the tile but this should only take about 10 - 15 minutes. Also, the cost to make the Scrabble tile pendants using the stickers is a lot less then resin, there is hardly any mess, and anybody can do it. The entire project will definitely fit into your 30 minute time frame.
@beadaholique12 жыл бұрын
I have found that mod podge dimensional does not result in the same appearance as resin. Resin has a more "clean" and "polished".
@beadaholique12 жыл бұрын
You can use whatever paper you like :) I am not quite sure what you mean when you say that you would need "resin in back of paper".

1. There is a difference between using resin and epoxy stickers. Resin is much more of a solid, permanent, professional option. The resin will give a glass like appearance to your finished piece and is water-proof. The stickers are a great option for fun and quick projects. They do give a nice appearance but it is not as polished as the resin and the stickers could become unstuck if submerged in water.

3. The small bottle of Gel du Soleil is pretty small (hence the lower price). I have never used an entire bottle just making these tiles, so I can not actually say how many you would be able to cover. It is also going to depend upon how thick of a layer you put on. In the product description, it says that it will fill 4 - 6 Patera style pendants depending on size. I think this is a good estimate as to how many tiles you could cover.

Probably closer to the 6 if I had to guess, but it is only a guess. 4. I have seen some resins yellow over long periods of time, especially if exposed to a lot of sunlight. Ice Resin is the resin I prefer, and I have not seen yellowing in pieces I did even 2 years ago. I have personally not seen yellowing with Gel du Soleil either. As for the stickers, I would not think that they would yellow since they are not a glue or a resin.

A sticky layer to me sounds like it is not curing properly which is either the resin being old or it not sitting in the UV light long enough. Even though it is recommended to keep your object in the UV lamp for 15 - 20 minutes, try keeping a test piece in there for 40 minutes and see what happens.

I personally prefer Ice Resin for making my own pendants and then I always seal my images with Nunn Design Sealant (3 coats) before pouring the resin. Ice Resin is a 2 part epoxy resin, I am not sure what type you purchased, but there are lots of brands out there and everyone has their own favorite.

I am sorry for the confusion, since your comment was made under the "Scrabble" tile pendant video, I assumed that was what you were working with. What type of paper are you using?
@beadaholique12 жыл бұрын
Resin will give you a more polished look then Dimensional Mod Podge and also a lot more "solid" appearance (hard and sleek). You probably could use Dimensional Magic and achieve a similar look but it will not be exactly the same.
@beadaholique11 жыл бұрын
I do a lot of printing of images and I prefer an 80# - 100# matte white paper. Sometimes this is listed as card stock and sometimes it is not. Basically you want it to have some weight to it so that the glue and sealants can be absorbed by the paper without warping it. I never use photo paper. If you plan on using resin on top of the paper, make sure to seal it with 3 coats of Nunn Design Sealant prior to coating.

Hi! Sorry I misunderstood about the glass tile, oops! I am so glad you liked the video :) A couple things come to mind about the glare and the bubbles. I have used glass tiles to make pendants before myself and I have also experienced some glare and bubbles. What I have found that helps is to apply the image to the tile first so that I can press on the backside of the paper to really smooth out bubbles. I then trim the image and glue it to the pendant.

Hi! I am not equipped to give legal advice but I do know that there are a lot of copyright free images which can be purchased or found free of charge - these will often tell you that they are fine to use. In general, I would steer clear of other artists artwork (unless they are selling it and giving specific permission to be used commercially) as well as known characters or images from the movie, animation, comic book, and literary industries.
@beadaholique12 жыл бұрын
It took me many years and many mistakes to learn what is in the blog. I do prefer Ice Resin for several reasons. Firstly, and this is just my opinion, I really like working with a 2-part resin vs. a UV resin. This is because once you put the UV resin under the curing lamp, that's it, you are committed and if any bubbles rise up during the curing process (or dust gets in there) there is not anything you can do about it. I find a 2 part resin to be more forgiving and you have more working time.

Resin cures best when an even temperature is maintained, outdoors will mean swings in temperature which could result in a cloudiness to your pieces. 2 part resins are more cost effective. I am sorry but I do not know how many 1" tiles you can make out of a bottle. A lot would depend on how thick of a layer you are putting on and if you are doming. It does not make a difference what size disc you use. Have fun!
@beadaholique12 жыл бұрын
Because it is a sticker, you could also potentially get finger nail imprints or scratches on the surface - resin will be much harder and more difficult to damage. 2. You can use diamond glaze but it will not be as high shine or glass-like as resin. You also will most likely not be able to get as deep of a layer as resin or as nice of a dome shape (if you plan on doming).

I would suggest gluing your sticker in place before putting the resin on top. There are lots of wonderful stickers and images out there but I worry that the resin might creep under some looser stickers if they are not glue in place. Also, you want to make sure that the image has a tight bond to the setting.

@linakaprice Mod Podge will work just fine as a sealant. A couple things to keep in mind as you are working with it: make sure to use several layers of Mod Podge. Personally, I find that I have the best results when I use 3 layers. So paint on 1 thin layer, let it dry, paint on a second thin layer, let it dry, and finally paint on a third thin layer and let it dry fully. The layers will dry quickly because you are going to be making them thin.

@artzinspiration If you want to achieve a completely smooth, domed effect on your scrabble tile, I would use either 1 or 2 part resin or epoxy stickers. The Diamond Glaze works, but it looks like a sealed/glazed finish and not a dome. I have tried to apply a heavier application of Diamond Glaze to mimic a raised effect, and the result was not the same as resin or an epoxy sticker.

You can not use resin to adhere the image to the tile so you need a glue of some sort - Mod Podge, Crafter's Pick, Nunn Design Glue all work well. For the top coat, resin gives a really permanent high-shine professional look, Mod Podge would not have the same appearance.

@linakaprice If you are using a 2 part resin such as Easy Cast or Ice Resin, the pendants will need to cure (dry) overnight before they can be moved and then will need to fully cure for another 2 days before they should be worn. However, if you are using a 1 part resin such as Gel du Soleil and have a UV lamp, they will cure in about 15 minutes. My best recommendation would actually be to make the Scrabble tile pendant using epoxy stickers.

You do not need a UV lamp for Ice Resin, it will cure on its own - 24 hours for a hard cure and 3 days for a full cure. I experienced a lot of bubbles too during my first forays into resin work.
