Technically you can use any square canvas size! If you want to export the pattern to use for print on demand sites for example then you should start with something at least 3000 or 4000 pixels in size.

Thanks for a good tutorial. What file size are you using when uploading to spoonflower ? I created a pattern at 10”x10” and wonder if I need to change it.

10x10 is plenty large enough for spoonflower. I usually go by pixels, 6000 pixels or 8000 pixels is my usual size for a pattern square. I go with jpeg for flat images, PNG I use for images that have a transparent background. Generally not on spoonflower.
