Laundry Baskets break down in the weather too quickly. The Pot needs to be thick quality plastic & made from food grade plastic that wo'n't leach toxins into the food producing tree hes planting. The pot needs to last many years & not release toxins into the tree & its fruit, esp as the plastic breaks down. A thicker laundry basket would be fine for shorter lived decoratibve plants

Can I substitute the sand with cocopeat and the straw/hay with coconut coir instead ( to reduce the weight of the basket)?

Very interesting however i would use a smaller diameter hole probally 11/2" spade drill bit (less messy). Then bore the holes further apart so as to minimize splitting of the plastic over time due to the internal pressures form root activity & soil expansion & degrading effects of UV sunlight. Shade coth probably 73%-80% but extend it all the way down to the level of the sandin your case you can "seal" the bottom of it with a thick cable tie. Additionally i would use the top loading watering method. Large glass bottle wine bottle fill with water etc with plastic or metal cap bore a small hole in this cap then get length of pvc pipe running the length of the drum. Heat one end of the pipe with heat gun to fit snuggly over the bottles cap the over end of the pipe cut at an angle and push this end in the soil according to the depth of the existing roots & push down further according to plants future growth. You may need to provide a brace for this method to keep the bottle upright and all should be well. I would also mix the potting mix with a quality top soil for prolonged sustainance for the plant. A very genius system. The only thing I would add to it would be some mineral s/rock-dust to the soil. This is great way to recycle/reclaim items for a very beneficial purpose. Thank you for posting this video!!!

I have a question about this: I live on a property that has black walnut trees...three very large ones. So that means that my soil has the juglone toxin in it and I can only grow those plants/trees that are tolerant to the substance. Is this method that you use done for keeping the trees or for starting them and growing them up to sell? I would love a solution to the soil issue here and this would be great but I know that in three to five years that tree will need a bigger container.
