Today we are bringing you the final installment in our recent trilogy of Goats' Milk Soaps (there will be more, just not yet!) Today we are showing you how we attempt to colour our Goats Milk soap a pink/red colour using Himalayan Rhubarb extract infused in Olive Oil.
The Himalayan Rhubarb extract was kindly gifted to us by Suzanne Dekel and can be purchased here:
www.suzannedek...
Our free Goats milk soap making recipe is included and is given at the bottom of this description.
We cover how to use Rhubarb infused olive oil in place of the regular olive oil portion of our soap to create a pink colour and we show you how to incorporate Goat milk into your lye water solution and the steps to take to ensure that it doesn't scorch or burn.
We then move on to filling our soap mould and texturing the top of our soap loaf.
Finally, we cut the soap and then fast forward to 4 weeks later to show you what the final colour result is after curing.
If you do wish to recreate our Goats Milk salt bar at home, here is the recipe that we created and feature in this video (the below quantities will fill a 2.5lb loaf mould):
For the Infused Olive Oil:
340g Olive Oil
3.4g Himalayan Rhubarb Extract
To create your infused oil, mix the rhubarb with the olive oil and either leave to infuse for a minimum of 4 weeks or use the quick heat method to infuse quicker.
For the Soap:
Sodium Hydroxide 109g
Water 109g
Goats Milk 109g
Himalayan Rhubarb Infused Olive Oil 340g
Coconut oil 184g
Shea Butter 75g
Cocoa Butter 38g
Sweet Almond Oil 99g
Castor Oil 57g

Great video Anne. Is your lye water 2:1, and can I please ask what the superfat is? Thanks so much for these video, lots to learn..

Hi Mary, we used 1 part Goats Milk and 1 part water to 1 part lye, giving a liquid to lye ratio of 2:1. We made this soap about 6 weeks ago and I honestly can't remember what superfat amount I used (didn't save the recipe as it was just a one off soap). I would presume I used superfat around 5%, but would need to run it through soap calc to remind myself and double check!

Have you considered standing the frozen goats milk in an ice bucket whilst you add the lye to keep it cooler? I made a non milk but fab Himalayan rhubarb soap i did cover to gel, it was an amazing red colour at 24 hours faded just a smidgeon over four weeks. To watch the colour change whilst making was so interesting going from brown to red. I wonder if it was the milk causing that difference. Try without milk to see. It is known to vary quite a bit. Thank you for a very good tutorial.

We normally stand the lye in a bowl with cold water to keep the temperature a bit lower - for some reason I didn't do that in this video though :-D Definitely worth doing though as it does help keep the temperature lower. We also made a Rhubarb soap without milk last year and the colour actually turned out very similar - I was hoping for noticeable differences, but there really weren't any! I think I need to play around with the infusion rate - and perhaps use an oil that hasn't been left for quite so long next time!

im torn between which one out of the coconut milk or the goats milk to try and make. I notice the recipe is the same, however the water total amount is 218 in the goats and only 200g in the coconut one, is that correct. x

I wonder if the age of the rhubarb infusion had an influence on the color. I have not used it myself but have seen some pretty pink soap made by others. Just curious, do you source your goat's milk from a farmer or the grocery store? Thanks for the video, always enjoy watching yours.

I think the age may have a part to play, so need to have another experiment I think! We try to source from local farmers, but it isn't actually very easy as there are not a lot of places near us that offer farmers Goats Milk, which is a real shame. The Goats milk in this video was a grocery store bought one.

That was interesting. The soap looks fabulous. I use straight goats milk with no water. Would this be why it comes to trace so quickly? I'm learning to be very quick 😁

It could possibly have an effect, or it may also be the oils that you use in your base recipe - we have some base oils that will always make the soap come to trace really quickly (we made an unfragranced soap with some new oils a few weeks ago and it traced in less than a minute, which took me massively by surprise!) Yes, sometimes speed is definitely of the essence!

Cheap or steep part 2 - the results! Are cheap soap making oils just as good as the most expensive?
