In today’s video I will be creating a tooled leather clutch. The leather that I will be using is from Montana Leather. It is the Vaqueta line of dyed Vegtan leather. One of the great things about this leather is that you do not need to dye it. This saves time, mess, and money. Here is a link to the leather and other items used in today’s video.

I found that the dyed leather cases nicely and cuts and tools well. The color is crisp, clear and I think turned out great. I will show you how to create the tooling pattern and each step of the process. If you did not want to tool leather then you could use the same design to create an easy gift.

Wow Robert. I was waiting to see the red leather project. Your flower design was like a tattoo artist. Very well done.

Thanks Kenny! I do think it came out nice. I think that I will end up making one of each color to have at my next artisan show. The flower gets better with each time.

Love it but not so crazy about covering the design with the closure thing. As an avid purse wearer and collector, I would prefer a snap closure so as not to cover the incredible design. That's just my preference. The piece is gorgeous and thank you for the video!

Thanks for your feedback. I’m still working through the design. I wasn’t really happy with my tooling details in the center so I was ok with covering. I have used a LOXX closure on past clutches. Have you used them? They are a bit expensive at $9 each. Thanks for following along with my journey

Nice!. The only thing I would do different, is I would use lace to secure the D ring and not thread. Thread will probably break. With a lace cutter and your belt thinner, you could make lace from the same material.

This came out awesome. I like the red. It has the old big chief tablet vibe. Lol I have the clutch template from Don Gonzales, you may have convinced me to try it out of this vaqero leather. Great video

Thanks for the comment Danny. I hope you are doing well today. Purchasing the template from Don Gonzales is a great way to go. Did you get tooling patterns as well? That would be helpful. The leather is sold in smaller panels as well.

Once again you created a beauty! Ever thought about adding a small gusset to your design?
@InMyBusyLittleShop

Good question. This is the first clutch I made without a gusset to see how it worked out. Still testing options! Do you like a gusset better?

Lovely work, as usual. What size D-ring did you use? I think the only thing that might make it a little more versatile is a single wrist strap.
@InMyBusyLittleShop
@InMyBusyLittleShop Ай бұрын
Thanks. I have made a wrist strap on other clutches as well. I agree that it’s a nice touch to add versatility to using the clutch. That was a 1” brass d-ring. That’s the first time that I have made a closure like that. I think it came out nice.

That project turned out great! I think the oil and Resolene added to the look of the clutch by deepening and muting the bright red color. I love the fact that you aren't afraid to take a risk and try something new that you haven't done before. "You'll never know unless you try" is what I usually say. A couple of quick questions: if you need to take a break from tooling, can you re-case the leather when you come back to it or do you need to allot enough time to do all of your tooling in one setting? Also, if needed, can you skive the Vaqueta leather to a thinner thickness without the flesh side losing its general appearance? Thanks for your thoughts as usual and again, nice little project! By the way, it looks the the stitching horse worked out well too!
@InMyBusyLittleShop
@InMyBusyLittleShop Ай бұрын
Thanks again William the stitching horse is working out great! I have split the leather and it seems to do the same as any other Vegtan leather that has been dyed. To explain if I take a natural Vegtan and split the end of a belt strap and the slick the back that are is a bit different in color and texture (the back). Now I dip dye leather… in that area the front is consistent where if you dip after splitting natural the split area usually is darker because it more readily soaks dye in. I agree on trying new things. I think it keeps our minds working to try and figure out the next step.
