How to Make a Sky Lantern

Back in (I think) 1980, my buddy and I made up about 40 of these using similar methods; balsa wood, shoe box cardboard, aluminum foil, cotton balls and gasoline for fuel. We used extra long garment bags from a dry cleaner (taped closed at the top). We secretly set these off on Halloween night and had the entire neighborhood and surrounding area totally in wonder at what they were. We did catch a couple of tall trees on fire with all the dry leaves (not the most responsible thing to do) but it did work out. That was the time when UFO's where all the rage and we had a lot of people kinda scared. The smoke from the fire box made the bag look really creepy! It was awesome!

I was thinking about creating something like this, but I wondered if it was perhaps dangerous. That's what I came to the comments for. I wanted to see if anyone had anything to say about the possibility of the lanterns getting stuck in the trees or landing in dry grass and starting a fire. Seems kinda irresponsible to play with fire this way.

Unless you plan on retrieving your lantern, please do not use plastics as they are not bio-degradable. There are plenty of other tutorials for sky lanterns that use paper.

Neuon Au plastic trash bags in the United States now contain cornstarch or similar product to produce a bag that will break down if exposed to uv light or moisture for an extended period. tgese new bags are biodegradable on the surface after a year. in the ground they take 14 months.

people are complaining about the negative impacts on the environment. So to anyone who wants to do this. Use tissue paper instead of a plastic bag so if it ends up in the ocean it’ll dissolve. also they used wooden skewers instead of iron/metal coils which was a great alternative. ☺️

Btw for anyone wondering why they use nail polish remover they probably have alcohol such as rubbing alcohol or ethyl alcohol banned or hard to get so they use ail polish remover but you can use rubbing alcohol and it'll work great.

nop, because the lantern stops climbing when it runs out of fuel. And if it falls before running out of fuel the friction of the air during the fall will extinguish the flame. Light a match and open the window of your car while you are driving, what do you think is gonna happen?^^

you need to heat it up more before releasing, like have 4 or 5 of the candles on the ground and hold it over them to warm up the air inside the balloon, when you feel the baloon getting lighter and like it want s to take off by itself then let it go.
