I am making one using the window frame as the frame. Going to mount it on a drip bund surround just off the garage roof.

DO you have a link for the aluminium T piece you used please? And as CP says, how has it been since you installed it and it has had time to bed in?

I love the idea of upcycling windows, I am going to be replacing my conservatory roof this summer, it's upvc and polycarbonate and leaks like a bugger, I was thinking of doing a DIY skylight this morning and found your video,part 2 seems to be missing but that could just be me. I have a slightly different idea to yours and would love to hear your feedback. My idea is to take the uPVC unit and then have a sheet of toughened glass cut 10-20mm larger all round than the unit. Next up is to use ultra clear UV bonding liquid to join the glass to the unit. Then spray the outside edge with black so from the outside you have a nice boarder. The glass and unit as 1 could then be bonded in to place with a strip of foam sealant and marine sealent to the roof. It's just an idea and there are probably a million reasons it would not work, but that's what a community is all about, sharing knowledge and making things work. Any feedback critical or otherwise greatly appreciated

Seems better thought out than my plan! People have said that a more substantial upstand is beneficial, they are probably right. 2 years on and still good, i may add a bit more sikaflex in autumn and routinely service before winter. I have an awful plastic conservatory too but i think eventually we want to knock it down and start again. Good luck

@@CamberKitesurfingcheers for the reply mate, it was one of those procrastinating days off and that's what came to me 🤔😂 I found part 2 of the video, can I ask a question? When you were installing the window I thought you were going to mount it the other way up, similar to what I plan to do with the glass on mine, have them slotted in flush with the Ali sealed to the roof. You mentioned more substantial upstands can I ask how they affect things? As I would be looking to go to zero upstands, would be good to hear about it. Have a great afternoon shane

@@MrShaneb1975 something to do with building regs i think, the other way up should work too, so long as it's completely sealed

my videos aren't making any money yet so the music is 'watermarked', but it's good for audiojungle as their advertising seems to be working!

I'm thi king of doing his with a few DG units myself and your video has helped big time. BTW What mastic did you use to avoid the breakdown of the black DG unit seal?

Unfortunately as this is a normal double glazed unit, the unit will probably fail and mist up due to UV attack on the glass butyl seals.the glazed unit is supposed to sit behind a bead to protect it from failing as its just window glass. Rooflights are bonded with structural silicone which doesn't fail under UV attack... Whilst a cheap way of doing things its not really a long term solution, but to be fair it's just for the garage. !! so who cares !!!
@CamberKitesurfing4 жыл бұрын
probably should have just bonded the whole door to the roof ;) It was a budget issue at the time, if they ever leak we'll do something else. I'll run some tape around the perimeter to stop the UV, thanks
