Here is how you can make a really reliable tripod mount for your smartphone. I've used it for all the videos I made so far, it doesn't take long to make and if you use scrap wood and/or recycled material, it costs nothing whatsoever.
Here are all the dimensions:
back plate: 85x60mm 8mm thick (length depends on the width of the phone)
lower jaw: 15x60mm 12.5mm thickness (mind the ridge of 0.5mm)
base (the part without name): 10x60x20.5mm
upper jaw: 20x60x20.5mm
grooves for the phone: 5mm deep 12mm wide
You can easily adapt this phone holder to fit a commercial tripod by replacing the 6mm bolt sticking out of the base with a 1/4" threaded insert.
Sorry for the slightly out of sync audio, I had issues with my video editor and had to render it three times.

Big thanks to my sister for lending me her phone for demonstration (mine was kind of stuck on the tripod the whole time)

Hi Benjamin! awesome post! Did you inherit your grandpa's workshop?
@ChronicMechatronic
@ChronicMechatronic 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Sorry for not answering your other comments (yet) I'm pretty busy editing atm :) No, the workshop grew out of the necessity after I started making stuff out wood at around age 7 or 8 after my mom gave me a small tool kit; I spent most of my teenage years piece by piece putting it together in that basement room of my parent's house 😅 Funnily enough I never planned on creating a YT channel till the beginning of 2020 where workshop was already pretty much as it is now, with perfect studio lighting and everything!

@@ChronicMechatronic Hi! Don't be sorry, I really don't want to waste your time, there's no emergency to answer my comments. I'm just amazed by your explanation. I did think someone in your family was a professional or hobbyist in wood working. Congratulation! I don't know people around me who built piece by piece a workshop like you did. Amazing. It's an enviable workshop indeed. Thank you for taking your time to answer Benjamin.

Watching you put your fingers so close to a router blade reminds me of when I was 11, and my dad took his thumb off...

Eww... I know I'm not a poster child for safe tool use, but I generally always make sure I don't slide into the blade should I slip. Push sticks aren't always safer in that regard

Dude Use screw to join the 2 woods, i do not trust glue that much
@ChronicMechatronic
@ChronicMechatronic 3 жыл бұрын
LOL... I trust glue more than screws - wouldn't hesitate to stick an iPhone 12 in there, if I had one. Obviously depends on the glue you use... But I've been using this smartphone holder to film every single vid so far, and I've never had any concerns.
