Do Solar ovens work in European countries ? I decided to make one and see if I could cook anything in it here in Northern France. My oven has the basic design as Desertsun02's oven with the exceptions that mine has an adjustable mirror, metal bars that raise the pans off the base and double glazing glass units as well as being a lot smaller overall. But a thank you to him nonetheless. Here’s a link to his video.....
• DIY Advanced Solar Ove...
This video only covers the build process and I will be posting a video dedicated to just testing it soon as well as future updates of what’s possible at different temperatures according to the different times of the year.
Cutting list. This is good for 2 x 20cm pans (non plastic handles)
ALL IN MILLIMETERS
All my panels except the inner base are made from 18mm thick wood.
Base. 650x 344. 1 off
Outsides. 200 x 326. 2 off
Insides. 200 x 250. 2 off
Inside back 200 x 534. 1 off
Outside back. 196 x 614. 1 off
Front fillers. 164 x 40. 2 off
Upper L & R filler. 308 x 40. 2 off
Lower L & R filler 308 x 40. 2 off
Handle support 650 x 50. 1 off
Base supports L & R 250 x 40. 2 off
Base supports F & B. 462 x 40. 2 off
Inner base (thin) 534 x 250. 1 off
Glass to fit..... single or double glazing.
Thanks for watching. Please give it a thumbs up if you found it to be ok and subscribe if for some reason you thought it better than just OK..... catch you later.... Know Expert.

My dad built a parabolic type oven out of hardboard and foil tape, coincidentally tried it out in south of France on oliday. Frankfurters took an hour to get luke warm, and that's all we ever ate on camping trips anyway so total success really.

Mmmm Luke warm frankfurters, when we were on oliday we used to dreeeeam of Luke warm frankfurters.... yep, total success. I’ve had it up to 105 c but I’m thinking of doing a complete re design building a new one and turning this into a water heater..... (or selling it)

Good build, I'm going to make a suggestion, take advantage of heat transfer through conduction by using black painted 1/4" steel sheets for your sides and base since metal absorbs more heat than wood. Heat transfer through radiation and convection will work themselves out.

For @donnanorth7324, the reason to lift all that is to retain HEAT when opening the oven, with TOP lid, all heat would ESCAPE on first opening. For @Know-Expert, can you comment on type of glass used? is it Tempered glass? or heat-resistant?

Very nice woodworking. But "Does it work in Europe?" - we still don't know. I wonder if more reflectors might be better, for our less sunny climate.

That oven would work in Germany, but only in summer and only for cooking. I also started with ovens like this, but if you seriously want to use the sun for cooking you need something bigger. My current setup can reach up to 200°C on hot days which means I can roast and bake, with less sunshine or in winter I'm still able to boil water, cook soups, stews etc.

It’s true that it could use a few tweaks to get more out of it but for what I use it for its great. 200c though wow that’s impressive the most I managed with this one is 106. I’ll check out your channel. Thanks.

@@Know-Expert I like to have a litttle extra power, just to be on the safe side. It's frustrating if you prepare a meal and then it won't cook properly or takes forever when people are hungry 😄

I have double glazing on my windows in my home, and I've noticed that it really gives some weird light refraction sometimes. Like when I try to shine a flashlight through a window. I think the insulation offered by the double glazing could be good, but I think the sun's rays would more easily penetrate a single layer of glass. Just a possibility to think about.

Sir which glass you have used so that it can withstand the temperature
@donnanorth7324

I'd start the design from scratch. Why lift all that wood and insulation? Make a lid with metal sides and glass front and top that pivots within the wood and insulation box. The box could be the bottom half of a Yeti.

I’m just following Desertsun02s design and to be honest it works great, It’s so easy to place and remove 2 steaming hot pans. I’m really looking forward to seeing your design from scratch, let me know when you’ve done it please.

What is the maximum temperature reached?
@Know-Expert
@Know-Expert 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Ashwin, I’m waiting for summer to start using it again. I finished making it in September and even though we had a couple of hot days I only managed to get it to 101 deg C. Since then I have added steel plates in the sides back and bottom and this summer I hope to get it above that. Bear in mind you only need to get something to 74 deg C (165 deg F) at its core temperature for a minimum of 2 minutes to kill any harmful bacteria (some foods need less) this info was taken from Foodsafety websites for America and UK. Happy cooking. Know Expert

Hi Jimmy. I managed to get mine to 100°c last year but this year the weather has been terrible and so it’s stayed in storage. I’m hoping the weather gets better before the end of my holiday so I can get cooking. Since the video I have fitted steel plates inside and painted them black. I hope this will help retain the heat ….. we’ll see…… thanks for watching
