Years ago on a 4th of July when it was well over 100 degrees, I just felt like I could not cook in the house because I did not want to add more heat to the house. So I talked my husband and his friend into building a solar oven. They built it outside in that terrible heat (I was out there with them supervising!). What a loyal husband! I have used it many times. I usually use it when it is too hot to cook inside. It is great!

I remember years ago (somewhere around the late 1960's), reading a book which I had checked out of the local library, which had complete "DIY" plans (including actual dimensions) to make a solar oven out of sheet metal. - The oven box itself when built, was around 14"(width (front to back)) X 15" (in length) X 12" (in height). - It (the box), was painted inside and out with a high temp flat black engine paint that would withstand temps of around 500 degrees F. - It had a 1/4 inch glass plate installed into the panel on top. It had a hinged metal door in the front side (just like a real oven). - It had 3 or 4 folding sheet metal panels which were highly polished (towards the box side), attached with hinges around the top edges which could be positioned towards the sun to direct the sunlight down through the glass top into the oven box and onto the pan, skillet, etc. which was placed inside with food. - I remember that it had small vent slots (cut into the metal) to keep the inside pressure (due to excessive heat), stable to keep it from cracking the glass top (but after all these years, I can't remember where they were positioned at (but I think they were on at least 3 of the sides)). - The reason I mention this is because I have yet to see a solar oven made from metal, which would stand up to rough abuse (out in the outdoors camping world), which would last for any length of time. - Most of them for sale on the commercial market now-a-days are usually flimsily (and cheaply) made out of cardboard, which probably wouldn't last for more than a few uses. - Oh well, so much for the (supposed), "cheaper the better, and throw-away", modern technology. - Anyway, there are the basic dimensions, if somebody decided they wanted to try and build one for their own use. - I take no responsibility for any burned fingers, or other personal injury's (if incurred), in the building, or the use, of such a device. - P.S. The author who had built it himself, said it worked quite well, and a lot better than he expected, and it did stand up for many years of use, and abuse.

Most of everyone who owns and cooks with a solar cooker use them on the road. Limited space, portability, and storage is what sells these things.

What too many overlook is the other possible applications.....Sure its good for an oven... but they can also be used as a hot water heater.. That oven gets up to 350 degrees internally if allowed to do so.. What about making a coil within the oven that could pass water through it??? And with enough ingenuity make it easily removable with a valve???

The All American Solar Cooker is not made out of cardboard. Quote AASC "The All Season Solar Cooker is constructed using 4mm corrugated polypropylene. A 2 mil outdoor rated reflective polyester film is pressure laminated to the polypropylene."

I have the newest model of The ASSC. Love it. I live in the desert so I use solar cooking almost exclusively. I have a Sun Oven, A UGLI Hybrid, and two big ones that I made out of stainless steel cooler cabinets. I really love the ASSC though simply because its so portable, and because I am up before dawn and outside (am a farmer) - I can start the ASSC as soon as the beautiful sun peeks over the horizon. If you put a paver stone under the trivet, it won't blow away.

Jen Goods Mine works great. My compliant with it is cheap screws that rust, aligners glued to glass pop off, thermometer broke a month old. For a few extra bucks that oven would be bulletproof, don't know why they skimp, but whatever.

It is so wonderful when I can come across the rare REAL talks about items. I value honest info so much, especially in this day and age where information can be driven more by personal interests (money gain, making connections, etc) than by a real interest to provide the truth. I have thought about solar ovens, both for home use and for camping, so this is good to know. Especially since any camping use would require something that could take a bit of a beating and still do it's job!

Great video. Thank you. I'm not a prepper or off the grid or anything.. I live in a major city actually... But I just thought the idea of a solar cooker was brilliant, and I figured it could come in handy in case of an emergency, like a hurricane, or a power outage. I think everybody has experienced a power outage in their life. And I just happened to have picked the all season solar cooker like the one you're showing in the video. So God brought me to the right one! And I'm glad you created this video to explain the differences between them, because I have seen all of those different solar cookers and I didn't know which one was the best. The main reason why I went with the all season was mostly because of the fact that it can use sunlight from sunrise to sunset whereas most other cookers it's mostly only in the middle of the day that you can use it. And I've still never used my cooker! I thought about cooking a chicken or or something, like I saw someone do online, I start to check it out because I'm afraid I'm going to spend money on the food and do the preparation and everything and then screw it up somehow. But now that the hurricane is about to plow through America I may end up needing to use it sooner than I thought. So thanks for the video much appreciated.

Oh my gosh - I think it is the greatest and makes the best tasting food and cooks super fast on a hot day. I used my solar oven for the first time this month- it has been in storage for 2 years saved for Emergency Prep but we decided to have a practice week so we brought it out. We spent about $350 for All American Sun Oven. But using it for everything now. HOWEVER I have a Portable Rocket Stove and I love love love that for night time use especially.

I love my Sun Oven and use it often to cook all sorts of deliciousness: beans, rice, soups, etc. I've even baked bread on a 15F day in January with a couple feet of snow on the ground. Once, though, it cartwheeled across the backyard with my beautiful half-cooked stew inside. In a windy climate, tie it down. You can't say the following, but I can. Daniel 1:12 - Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. Psalm 113:3 - From the rising of the sun to its setting The name of the LORD is to be praised.

I love my sun ovens. My only "problem" with them is during the winter, we rarely have enough sunshine in W. Michigan to use it effectively. (Using the sun in Michigan can be challenging!) But it works wonderfully when we DO have sun -- I love to use them instead of heating the kitchen up with the oven/stove in the summer. I'm surprised you can control / regulate the temperature enough to incubate yogurt or dehydrate things -- never tried that. Huh! I think mine would get too hot or the temp would fluctuate too much.

All American Solar Oven has a Plex cover to keep the heat in. I have the older version that is advertised to heat up to 350 degrees. But that happens only if you constantly adjust it for optimum sun capture. If you don't adjust it to the passing sun, you can expect it to heat closer to 325 degrees and expect about double the cook time. I used the solar oven exclusively the first summer of purchase to get familiar with it. Now I have the peace of mind that I can cook with just the energy of the sun.

Starry, thank you so much for your very helpful and informative video! I was looking into solar ovens and close to buying the "Sun Oven" but then saw your video. You saved me three hundred bucks! LOL! They ought to pay you a commission, you know? I just purchased the All Season Solar oven (2017) for a little over a hundred dollars and the other company's product was $400 plus tax, etc. and didn't include as much as the All Season, nor was/is it as large! I'm so excited now and anxious to receive my new outdoor oven. Living in upstate NY, most places don't get a ton of sun as it is, but thank goodness the south end of my house has no trees obstructing and provides loads of sun for my garden - and now my coming solar oven! You're the best... I subscribed and am looking forward to learning more from you, super-woman!

Thanks for the info Stary. I live in FL & have lots of hurricanes. Last year when Hurricane Matthew blew through we were without power for 12 days. Sure could have used a solar oven then. Blessings.

The evacuated tube cookers come into their own at higher latitudes where we have less sunlight available and need more insulation. I'm in the UK and we were able to cook bread in December using one of these, when a sun oven or panel cooker wouldn't work effectively.

Hi Starry! I have always thought this type of solar cooking was so smart. I first saw something like it when a guy from Africa used a tire, stuffed with newspaper and foiled and then glass on the top. No more gathering wood to cook their meals. I shared your video on Facebook. Have fun at the conference, wish I could go.
