It’s quite interesting to see these videos about making a spear for $20, which then proceeds to show the material and its cost, and then proceeds to create it with equipment that likely cost over $1k. 😊

Im sure you can achieve the same result with a little ingenuity and creativity, he was just using what he had access to, I'm quite sure the lack of industrial grade equipment didn't stop people from making one of the oldest inventions ever, It's a spear.
@johndiamond2548

You could do it all with a vice, 4 1/2 inch grinder and a hand drill. Use a 1/4 inch piece of pipe instead of 1/2 inch. Use a smaller floor chisel - one with a neck width closer to 1/4 inch. Mount a 3/8 inch drill in the vice and turn it down with the drill. The only addition I would add for this awesome design (by the poster, not me) would be a weld bead to hold the friction fit blade in a little better. I have a welder so no problem for me. Buy a case of beer for one of your friends that has a welder and ask him to do it. Or bring it to a welding shop. The guy will probably charge you $25 (or do it for nothing).

Built my forge for the price of a dollar store hair dryer. Bought an anvil for less than $150. From there, it's all practice.

This spear really exhibits some character, here. Are you brasing the blade to the pipe? Just wondering, as an oaken dowel would really compliment the chisel-spear. Music, also a good choice. Keep up the good work, son.

I must have missed the part where you heat-treated the blade. I thought you were going to forge that chisel point into a leaf-shaped spear point. I'm not a fan of the fat, diamond shaped blade.

To be honest spearhead can slip from pipe. It should be drilled and there should be metal pin to hold it in place. Rest is ok. I made something similar but using old file for longer blade.

I thought I would be watching a forging video, but this was kind of cool to see this. Well done, looks like you had a good time. A couple of notes for you to consider. A spear is a 3 dimensional weapon. Your spear design is really cool looking but not functional. If this spear was used, lets hope there is never a need for that, but if it was used the wide diamond shape will get stuck in rids and pelvic bone, possibly the skull. Alot of the use of a spear is as a defense weapon to force an opponent to extend, meaning a spear is used in a extended sweeping motion, thoes diamond tips will cause the spear to roll in your hand and you may lose grip. Any there is more but I'm sure youmade this to spear plywood, hopefully.

The main use of a spear is as a projectile weapon. Or maybe to thrust. Not to be swung in an arc as you describe. It's not a polearm or an axe. I think the spearhead he made in this video is not a far cry from a broadhead arrow tip.

Depends on the planned use. If the forging wasn't compromised, then he made a steel/iron staff with a wide pointy end.

So all the equipment you used is under $20 at home depot you say? I know you said under $20 for the pipe and chisel etc. But are we supposed to have everything else already? Of not could you gentleman point me in the direction of that homedepot. I have a lot of shopping to do :) lol

Should carve a groove into the end and hammer it in this way the pipe bites into the spear tip. Then you could drill a hole through it and put some rivets into it to make it secure... My god... So many people complaining about 30$...

looks amazi g Jake. Why did you not heat treat and temper it?
@JakesCustomKnives
@JakesCustomKnives 8 жыл бұрын
I was going heat treat it, but the chisel was already heat treated and is very durable. I didn't want to take the chance of over hardening the steel and having chip or break. The chisel held an edge pretty well even without heat treating it..
