If I am correct, making sprite sheets helps performance because this reduces the amount of textures used by your graphics card (this amount may be limited, though that isn't that big of a deal these days) and saves wasted memory if you use textures equal (or close) to numbers that are power of 2 (128x128, 256x256, 512x512, 1024x1024 etc) because that's usually the only texture sizes your graphics card can allocate.
@MaxxVelocity2 жыл бұрын
You cannot make broad statements like that. Performance depends upon many things. The theoretical gain from having textures in a single object is negligible when contrasted against the effects of caching schemes and the standards of minimal hardware. Some of the worst engineering I've seen was from young adults who think they are "optimizing".
@Khud02 жыл бұрын
@@MaxxVelocity Hi, thank you for sharing your experience! I'll try to defend broad statements by asking: "Would you rather have the sprites on sprite sheets or as separate files?" I think there's no harm in structuring the game art in a project, even if the effect was merely making it more organized.

Excellent Tutorial, I didn't know having a sprite sheet improves performance. Im gonna have to move all my sprites into sheets and see how much better it runs. 👍 Subbed
@Khud04 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad I could help! I am not sure if there will be a significant difference in performance unless you have a ton of sprites in your game. However, If you're using Unity, you can click "Stats" in the top right corner of game window to see your progress. There you will find your approximate current FPS, while the line "Batches" - "Saved by batching" will tell you how many draw calls are saved thanks to using a sprite atlas (sheet).

Thank you I needed this for my college work because we aren't allowed to use scripts to make the sprite sheets for us.

That sounds a little strange, but I'm glad I could help. :)

@@Khud0 well we are allowed scripts but we aren't allowed to use open source stuff so by default we can't use a sprite sheet generator script unless we made the script ourselves.

That works if you have 6 sprites but there has to be a different way. I already have 144 sprites for walking alone and this is only one character.
@Khud0 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that sure sounds troublesome. Unfortunately, I don't know a better way to make sprite sheets. Maybe try searching for "automatically pack sprites into sheets" or "pack layers into sprite sheets" or something like that? Good luck!
