How to make a Squirrel Baffle from a plastic bottle

On this episode of the Lake Hills City Birds I am making a squirrel baffle from a 2 liter Coco-Cola Bottle. I've seen squirrel baffles in stores but I didn't won't to spend money on something I could possibly make myself. I did a search on Pinterest to get some ideas of what has worked for other people. The easiest and quickest I saw was made from plastic bottle. So, I decided to give it a try. So far it has worked great. I will keep an eye on it and if any squirrels get passed it, I will definitely do an update video.

I bought mine from the Lodge Factory store in South Pittsburg, TN but I do not see it on their website.

I keep 2 Liter soda bottles for projects , so I cannot wait to try this today BUT, primarily against Grandpa (Our elder resident Rat Snake who usually dines on field mice) from eating our baby birds. He was hanging out near a bird box that had near-fledges yesterday (Titmice) and despite spider webs still intact, I'm not confident he didn't have a midnight snack. But the BlueBirds had been haranguing the Titmice the night before (property dispute I thought) and now I'm wondering if they weren't trying to tell me Grandpa was coming in. [That's what they did yesterday when he was found on the lawn, AFTER the titmice had skedaddled one way or another.]

I hope this works. I have a bluebird house with a camera. She is sitting on 5 eggs right now and I don't want to see any predators on camera. I know it is all a part of nature but I really want to see these bluebirds hatch. I'm doing a video series on it. I haven't seen any snakes here since we moved in 3 years ago but we have a lot of other critters so I'm sure they are around. Our last house, snakes were everywhere. There was one under my kitchen sink one day. But the backyard up to the house was wooded so we pretty much lived in their territory. I keep plastic bottles around for projects too. @@BobbiJo Thanks for telling me you're doing a bluebird hatch series! Yes, I will now be subbing to you & appreciate everything you're doing to give nature a hand! I become annoyed when well intentioned husband, "It's nature doing its thing" because I know that! What I DON'T want to do is have a buffet in the middle of my yard JUST because I'm a birder *and* love my snakes. I got two plastic bottle baffles up now; one on the bird house pole (fingers crossed the bluebirds give it a chance) and the other on the bird feeder pole (I have one like you have). I am currently waiting for a squirrel to see if he becomes *baffled.* Haha!

@@Livingsamsara I have a squirrel that has figured out how to jump over one of my plastic baffles. It keeps most of them off the feeders though. I put 2 on that feeder pole and so far the squirrel hasn't figured it out. He is a smart one though .

@@BobbiJo I was actually thinking of adding another one since my station is so close to the tea olive and also the bird bath & this is where some jump from. I know that I do NOT expect 100% deterrence but I'd take half. I consciously want it near greenery since the hawks here can get quite serious about getting a bird so, for a quick cover or getaway.

I attached a Coke bottle to the bottom of a slinky. The slinky by itself didn’t work. I can’t tell how you’re attaching the bottle with the zip ties. Seems like it would all just slide down the pole unless you have a hole in the pole.

He attached it where it didn't slide down the pole. We did eventually removed it and turned it into a peanut feeder for the blue jays. The plastic bottle keeps the squirrels away. Thanks for stopping by.

Can you tell me a little bit more about your tire feeder I can't tell what size tire that is

It is actually ceramic and the small birds love it. I think it is around 6 - 7 inches. It would be easy to make one out of a small tire though. I may look into that for a project. I will post the link on this video to the ceramic one when I get home.
