I've made several flakers like this. I found it helps to grind the tip of the nail to shape with a belt sander/angle grinder until it changes color. Softens the steel and helps reduce slipping.

Question for you Nick. The copper boppers you use in your primal dagger series. Who sells those? I like the ergonomics of the handle and would like to order a set.

That is exactly what my first pressure flaker was; a nail and a piece of wood. Works fine. The copper one I bought only worked marginally better.

Haven't seen you for a while.....missed you. Good to have you back. You always seem to come up with the easiest way to do something without all kinds of expensive tools. Something I greatly appreciate. Loved your PVC bows, file knives and these tools. Tried all of them and they work (I just can't yet make a descent field point....I just make a pile of smaller stones), I like to see a bottle bottom point being made someday. keep up the good work.

If you can't find copper nails, you can usually get 4 or 6 gauge solid copper wire at a hardware store. Or if you're feeling naughty you can also find this size wire used as grounding wires on wooden power poles.

Are aluminium rods a good alternative? If you are using steel nails, do they have to be annealed before they can be used?
@BackyardBowyer7 жыл бұрын
+shade_grey Aluminum rods are my favorite, but they wear down even faster than antler. I may do a video on those soon. You don't have to anneal the nails, but you could and it would help with grip. Thanks for watching!

Great video Nick, I think I'm going to give that a try this weekend. Is flint the only rock to go for or can one use other types of rock? I'm down here in New Mexico so I can find Obsidian I'm sure, but just curious if other rocks work.
@BackyardBowyer7 жыл бұрын
+Aaron Craig Awesome! If you can get obsidian, it is a great material to start out with. It's a lot easier than starting with flint or chert. Just make sure to keep band aids on hand. Thanks for watching!

Or drill a hole the size of your nail into the dowel use a hack saw or a dremil to cus off the top glat part of the nail. Use sandpaper or a knife and score slach routghen the nail fill the hole in with glue push the nail in and wioe of exess glue

Where can I get stones like that to learn knapping on?
@BackyardBowyer7 жыл бұрын
+Boblo You can try searching online to see if obsidian or flint can be found in your area. Any local rock or lapidary shops should be able to either sell stone or point you in the right direction. If not, there are places online you can get stone. I like ordering from Craig Ratzat at Neolithics.com as he has a good selection and pretty reasonable prices and shipping. I also like to walk creek beds with a copper bopper. If I run across a rock that looks like it might be knappable, I'll give it a whack to see if it flakes well. I've found a lot of nice jasper and agate this way. Hope this helps!
@jasonallenwise7 жыл бұрын
There's a website called Neolithics which sells 'blanks' for flint knapping out of the stone of your choice as well as selling large chunks of said stones for flint and steel fire making. Their snowflake and blood obsidian are beautiful and their English gun flint is some hard, tough stuff.
@weaponkid11217 жыл бұрын
BackyardBowyer is there a certain stone you'd recommend for a beginner?
@winnievanorden15 жыл бұрын
@@weaponkid1121 Bottle glass for beginners. See utube for how to get the bottom to break loose in tact. Obsidian....its relatively inexpensive. Try your local rock shop for slabs. Opalized petrified wood knaps easily but is more expensive. Chert, flint. agatee and jasper need to be cooked. Otherwise, they're tougher than the nails you knap with. I can send you a box of obsidian spals for about 20$ and that includes postage. I would email you a photo of the exact pieces before sending them to make sure you liked them. My email is winnievanorden@gmail.com
@devild92 жыл бұрын
@@winnievanorden1 I’d be interested in some obsidian to start out with its not local to my area. But I can get plenty of flint from what I hear.

Why would you use copper over steel?
@BackyardBowyer Жыл бұрын
Copper is softer and tends to grip the material better. Steel sometimes slides and does not grip as easily. Steel is fine if your abrade your piece well and it lasts much longer. Copper wears down pretty quick.
