bought one years ago and fiddled with it,.light bows only, useless contrivance as far as im concerned there's a reason most of the world has stayed with Mediterainian ,but I can accept three fingers under for its merit too.

It takes a lot of training to be proficient in this style with a heavy bow. Cutting off an archer's thumb effectively made them useless as they would be right back to having to learn a totally different style within a tradition and available equipment that is awkward with a Mediterranean draw.

Nice bow!!!! I also really appreciate the bonus reverse twist bow string tutorial! I usually buy string but then I have to shoot for that length and the loops are often to small. Thank you

Hey backyardbowyer. I was wondering, could you get a lighter draw weight with this build using a thinner pipe?
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 11 күн бұрын
Yes. If you go down to 1/2" schedule 40 pipe, the bow will be around a 25 pound draw. Also, for every inch longer pipe you start without, the weight will go down around 2 and a half pounds.

With a heavy enough arrow, yes. Treat it like a homemade wooden whitewood selfbow. I would shoot at least 500 grains.

Hey Nick, a quick question, is it possible to add more than one rod, if yes would it perform better or just make it heavier?
@Jovan-e5s
@Jovan-e5s 12 күн бұрын
Hi Nick. Recently I came across your channel and decided to build one or more pvc bows. I'm in Australia and our pvc pipes are extremely thin-walled unfortunately and probably unfit for bows. I've seen other people give it a try and come to the conclusion that the pipes just aren't strong enough for the task. So instead I opted for a much more rugged and thicker-walled pvc electrical conduit pipe. Something that I noticed even before starting my first proper build is that the electrical conduit pipe kind of retains its shape when bent. Some curviture remains even when the raw pipe is allowed to flex back. Is this a fatal flaw for a bow made from this material in your opinion? I have a feeling that a bow made from this stuff would quickly lose draw weight. But I will let the pvc bow master have a word on this haha
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 12 күн бұрын
Hi! Electrical conduit has additives that shifts the deformations temperature of PVC, so at room temperature it acts like hot PVC and ends up taking a heavy set or permanent bend. This makes it able to resist becoming brittle at low temps. If you can find schedule 80 pipe, it is thicker and resists deformation a little better. I hope this helps.

@@BackyardBowyer I appreciate the reply Nick. Unfortunately in Australia we have nothing in the way of schedule 40/80 or even furniture grade pipe

Why are they so expensive? I've seen them for like $400 to $500
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 13 күн бұрын
It really depends what they are made of. You can get plastic and 3d printed ones fairly cheap and cast brass ones aren't too bad. Traditional silver and gemstone rings can get super expensive. I've seen antique Ottoman Empire rings for several thousand. You could probably buy a car for a certified Imperial Chinese ring.
