Andrew, it's almost been 2 years since I started my build and due to personal events it got postponed multiple times. But I finally finished it about 1/2 weeks ago. I took out it yesterday and was pleasantly surprised how responsive it was! It's shape is absolutely hilarious, I didn't follow any shape and just freewheeled it because I was in it for the experience and learning. It's something only a mother could love, lol. I'd like to thank you through this comment to say I still follow every video you post and will continue to do so; I'm going to make more boards for sure! Thanks a lot for your videos, they're super helpful! Cheers, Sam

I know this video is from a bit back but you're absolutely correct at 12:04 The reason for this is that resin releases heat energy when it cures, and the higher the temperature of the resin the faster it will cure. This can result in a positive feed back loop of resin cures which releases heat which increases the temperature of the resin which makes resin cure faster which releases more heat etc etc causing thermal runaway and you'll cook the resin. The act of pouring it out will dramatically increase the surface area to which the resin is exposed to air, which allows for the resin to give its heat to the cooler air and stay at room temperature.

Andrew W... you totally inspired me to make a longboard & I really enjoy watching all your videos! I am at the final stages of making my board... it is a 9'8" board... I need to wash the paint & glass it & do the final polishing. One of the biggest differences was the foam... I used XPS from Lowes (it was a bluish green color). Everything seems VERY solid so far. I made SO many mistakes along the way... but with every challenge, I learned something & overcame it with some creative ideas. Initially I tried a foam board glue/caulk but failed miserably. I went with Gorilla glue.. there really is no substitute for it.. it worked fantastic. Also, the rasp for shaping was vital. I could not imagine not using it. I wish I knew where to buy epoxy resin cheap(er) online than some of the sources out there, as that seemed to be the biggest expense in the process. ($125 for 1.5gal resin kit). I also did not have an easy source of wood for the stringer in the length I needed so I went with Pine for the stringer. I have already glued more foam sheets together to make another board for my kids. This will be a smaller 8' stringer less board with 4 oz fiberglass. I used 6oz for the longboard. some other noticeable differences. 1st timers: don't do cut laps.. do free laps. I tried a cut lap my first time.. FAILED MISERABLY! The tape came off all the way around the board & it made a HUGE mess. And it was quality tape too (3M) Also, I used paint brushes rather than a roller for painting... I'm hoping the hairline brush strokes will provide some additional surface area for the final glass coat to adhere. I plan to wash with a VERY fine soapy steel wool to add microscope scratches in the paint's surface for even more adhesion surface. Also, I had an idea for a DIY vented leash plug that I wanted to run by you... I wish I had your email so I can share some pics with you of my almost complete longboard! ~ Jason

I am considering making a diy board. Nube surfer here and kinda getting stoked about the sport and the craft of shaping. Thank you very much, you made the whole process crystal clear. I was impressed with the glue-on fins which seems like an ideal way to work for a beginner rather than placing finboxes. If that goes wrong it might screw up the whole process. I am wondering what hot coating means ?

Great Video. How do you avoid cutting through the bottom layer of fibre glass when doing the second cut lap. It seems to me that you need to cut through the top layer, but you would not want to cut through to the foam on the second joint.

Man I'm glad I watched this...I dont remember seeing you square up the edges of the blank with the hot wire cutter in the original build series. I'm starting my build next weekend. I was wondering about that little detail. I figured I would get away with doing a rip n flip on my table saw to get clean blank edges, and then halve the thing lengthwise. Not even sure if I can get away with using the table saw (general purpose blade) on xps to begin with.

Love your videos, I am about to embark on a hollow wooden board build which is terrifiying me. But before I do that I was wondering if you knew the answer to this question. Is it possible to re shape a foamie surfboard by shaving off the foam to slim down the rails a bit and still keep it foam, or would it then need glassing and new fin placement?

Andrew W if the pinky foam cost $52 isn't it better to purchase a polyurethane foam blank and use cheaper polyester resin. In the Uk the money I would save using this pink insulation foam from Home Depo plus all the extra work plus extra cost of epoxy resin, it pays me to use polyurethane foam blanks and polyester resin. perhaps the polyurethane blanks are unavailable and far from your home? I'm lucky the surf place is 30 miles from my home but if you get them blanks posted they charge the cost of one blank £50 to send 2 blanks
