Thanks for this tutorial. My old pressing ham (it was my mother's before it became mine) split open beyond repair and I haven't been able to find the extra in our budget to replace it. Now, with your clever pattern, I can DIY myself a new one for a fraction of the cost.

Great tutorial, I have a tailors ham but not a sleeve roll so you've inspired me to make one using an old woollen blanket! I didn't know you could get /use hamster bedding for the inside - thanks for your great video!
@Penguinandpear3 жыл бұрын
A sleeve roll is next on my list!!
@glendavizecky75813 жыл бұрын
It also can help if you make an internal layer of muslin to make it sturdier. You can make a sleeve roll by tightly rolling old magazines. Then cover with muslin then with fabric and wool.
@Penguinandpear3 жыл бұрын
An extra layer isn’t necessary and may make it not work as well as you want the wood chipping to bounce the heat back to your garment. You get the sturdiness from the outer fabrics you use and how densely you pack the wood into it.

Hi Claire, you made this look really simple. A tip in terms of the denseness of the ham, I saw a blog where they used a food processor to break up the shaving to a finer consistency, to alleviate the fluffiness of the pet bedding. Thank you for sharing.

I woke up thinking ‘what’s that thing called you use to press armhole sleeves?’ Then I found your terrific tutorial and pattern. I don’t think we have hamster sawdust where I live in Spain, or even hamsters, but I’ll look in the pet superstore today. My cat Sara helps me in my sewing room too, passing me the pins, unthreading the cotton etc. Thanks Claire, happy sewing everyone!

Hi Claire- thanks for this lovely tutorial. This is exactly how I made mine a couple of years ago. I got a wool scarf from the charity shop and an old pillowcase. Worth leaving it to settle for a day and packing some more into the ham. Great idea about the spoon. I use my ham all of the time 🤓🏴. p.s. I gave the remaining stuffing to my friend who has a rabbit 🐇

Place a rolled up magazine in the ham . It will unroll and become a large funnel. Much easier, learned from another crafter. Thanks

Given you’re using it for pressing curves I would advise against this. You need it compact but pliable.

I've never thought of this as a necessity just because I didn't want to pay for one. But I think having this would be really nice to have. Thanks for the instructions so now I can make my own! I love the hamster bedding idea. I might just use your ideas and go ahead and make a sleeve roll as well as making me my own tailors clapper with a block of soft wood.

My homemade hams are stuffed with wood pellet cat litter or equine horse bedding pellets. They turn to sawdust when damp so you can steam and stuff to capacity for a firmer ham.

Thank you for the tutorial! I made a ham last year and it's comically small since I'd never seen one in person and had no idea of the dimensions. And all those different camera angles at the sewing machine were fantastic, that must have taken ages to shoot!

Using a large funnel (like to fill jars of marmalade) to fill the cushion will help avoid the mess.
@Penguinandpear2 жыл бұрын
The sawdust would not flow through a funnel.

This is the easiest tutorial I’ve seen, thank you. Does it have to be wool? as I don’t have any wool fabric scraps. 🧶🌈🍓
@Penguinandpear3 жыл бұрын
I think wool is the best option. You just don’t want anything synthetic as it will melt under the iron. Perhaps ask your local shop if they have a scrap or order a tiny amount.
