Cornelius, thanks so much for this video and both patterns. Your ham patterns are by far the best on youtube. I made both this evening, one with wool on top (cotton bottom) and one with cotton on top (wool bottom) and then I stuffed with fine sawdust. They turned out perfect. Best video I've ever seen about tailor's ham. Thanks for the thorough explanation and pattern! I've made one before, but I want to make a new one with your method. That asymmetrical shape makes so much sense. To others who do not own a ham yet, GET ONE OR MAKE ONE IMMEDIATELY. Pressing seams is secret to making garments look professionally made. The ham helps with pressing properly!
@CorneliusQuiring Жыл бұрын
You said it better than I could. Pressing is important :) Hopefully you get around to making one yourself.
@GM-qq1wi Жыл бұрын
To avoid making a mess and needing to re stuff the shape as often, it requires the original form to be as compacted as possible before it's enclosed in it's cover. I have a method (I don't know if it's original) that results in hams that are as stiff as a rock. I pour sawdust into a simple ham shaped cover twice as large than the desired size and stomp it viciously into a solid little mass about half its size. Trim off the excess fabric after hand basing the layers together, close to the shape. A little excess fabric doesn't matter, this layer can be ugly, as long is the form isnt bumpy. To cover it; drape the bottom peice of fabric over the form and use long stitches with upholstery thread to pull it over the shape tightly by stitching from one side over to the other. Then drape the top peice over the opposite side. Stitch with long zig zag basting stitches between both peices of fabric (like a corset) all the way around, tuck in the edges neatly and extra fabric before cinching as tight as humanly possible. Keep the zig zag stitches in place while hand sewing the folded edges down and closing any tucks/pleats with tightly spaced stitches in upholstery thread, then take out the zigzag basting stitches. If it becomes soft over time, you can just sew a new cover onto it, even tighter than before, leaving the old one intact, this will avoid the need to take it apart to restuff it.

@CorneliusQuiring9 ай бұрын
As long as it's a proper wood sawdust, it's certainly worth a try. The key is that it needs to be able to take heat without burning.
@thezacharycolby Жыл бұрын
I'm definitely going to be making both of these. Question: Does the sawdust variety leak sawdust at all? Or sort of poof dust? I wonder if using a wool coating with a backing on it might help prevent that...
@CorneliusQuiring Жыл бұрын
Between the thicker fabrics (coat wool and medium weight cotton twill) and the double sewing, I haven't had any leaking or poofing issues with the sawdust. My biggest challenge was to vacuum the sawdust off of the outside as it was rather messy. There's still a bit there.
