Jim YOU ROCK BRO!! Because of your videos, I am progressing and learning every day. My In-Laws 60th Wedding Anniversary is a few weeks away and I couldn't have figured this out without your KZbin videos on the Ortur LM2. When I finish all the Party Favors, I'll post the pictures. Couple of tips you may find useful: When you want to copy the same settings to multiple layers you can just select the layer you want to copy , then on the right of the layer window bellow the rubbish bin delete icon are 2 arrows one pointing to the right and one to the left, click the top one pointing to the right, this copies the settings to clipboard, then select the destination layer and press the lower button pointing back to the left, this will transfer all the settings back to the new layer. You can also use the 'set as default" and other controls inside each layers settings to change layer settings to a saved value. I noticed when you cut out the board it was hanging on in one spot on each one. This is probably at the start point of each cut. Inside the settings for the layer (i think on the latest version it is on the advanced tab) you can set a delay for start and finish dwell when you set that a line should be "cut through" I set mine to around 0.5 second or so, this ensures that the laser is up to power before it starts moving and you get a clean cut all the way around. really like the videos, thanks

15:30 the left and right arrows under the trashcan icon in the cuts/layers panel (right side) are used to store and recall speed and power settings. so instead of going into every layer and changing by hand you can store the value of the layer you want and paste it into another. saves a lot of time! :-) thanks for sharing your way of doing this technique :-)

@The Edge of Tech - Use DTFB (Dollar Tree Foam Board) it will cut just as well but more importantly it has some thickness to it to better hold/align your parts. I also use the clean edges of the DTFB to reference off the frame of the laser or the work service (think lasered or 3D printed stops screwed down to butt against) so they can be easily reused.

QUESTION is at the end...I have an Ortur Laser Master 2 20w! Jim @The Edge of Tech, thanks for this video. It has helped me understand how to burn cork coasters a lot better and the template method is something I tried today and it worked out great! I created my own setup following your directions in the video and have almost matched everything you have. I burned a couple of my coaster project files today for testing and they came out great. I do see one issue that I am not sure if you have seen yet. After the burn/engraving, I blow off the surface of the coaster but after handing it for a few minutes, there seems to be a lot of black soot coming off of it and making the burn smudge some on the coaster. My questions are: Have you run across this and have you found a way to minimize the smudging from the leftover soot on top of the coaster? Does this need a clear coat or something to protect it? Thanks Jim for all you do. Your channel is amazing.

First of all, love all your videos. Question on this one: Did you find 2 passes was sufficient to cut through the posterboard? I used regular poster board and after 4 passes it still didn't cut through. I'm on inches and used a 20 speed/85 power, then decreased to 15/85. Still not cutting. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong? I should mention my laser head is down as far as it will go, but that still doesn't seem to get it low enough for my focus tool to touch. Any help is appreciated.

Great explanation. I totally understood how to do that. I have a 40X40 Inches - 160 watts laser engraver/cutter I ordered for my small business. Maybe you could help with what I bought it for as far as plotting and repetition. I am using mine to cut .1875" holes into a 3×3 aluminum tube 37.50" long. The hole placement is super critical. I was thinking I could place 13 of these side by side and have a dead stop on 2 sides to ensure squareness. I assume I could do what you did and do a individual plot for one, and just copy it to repeat 13 times(or however many I need at that time.) Is it possible to set a homing location to where the laser would start at the spot where I have the dead stop? I'm not that technically savvy with computers, but had to make this investment as my work load has increased dramatically. You made it so easy to understand, thank you. I've watched hours of other videos and none of them clicked to me. I instantly SUB'D your channel. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Hope to hear back from you. Thanks.

Very nice and thank you for taking your time to help us all here. I have a question, although is an old video, the only detail I didn't see was setting up the 0,0 point or home position in the event I need to re-use the template. From what I understand you're using Ortur's home default position. How do I position the template in the same spot if re-using? Thinking on building a plywood template for the coaster but struggling to figure out how to position the template exactly every time, unless I burn a cross hair mark on the template and set work origin to that point. Kind of newbie here, any suggestion or comment? Appreciated, again, thank you for your videos, FANTASTIC.

Just a thought for future ref (what I do) If you place your template on the measured grid. Record where you place it (I add notes to the lightburn file select no output on notes) If you need to do more you can relocate with ease.

I noticed that after you cut out the template you didn't refocus the unit to cut the coaster which is way much thicker, did you refocus off camera or don't you have to? Q2...what video is best for to start watching, I know sweet tweet at the moment. Want to try the coaster thing to start as I have loads of cork. Thanks again. Awesome stuff you're showing. Andrew

I’m following your instructions to cut a poster board template for dog tags. I created a rectangle and sized it. Then I did an array of 4 x 6 to make 24 rectangles. I made each one an individual layer. They are all set as line, 500 speed, 100 power and 4 passes. All are set as output. Only 2 of the 24 are cut out. The other 22 are visibly at a lower power. Using a fox alien laser. Any ideas why only 2 will cut?

When you want to make a circle or square hit the shift key while you are dragging it out to size and it will be a perfect circle or square. What power is your laser? I have the 15 watt and cannot get it to even make a mark on white poster board. It will cut any other color just fine.

I do something similar on my K40, all I do though is do a quick light pass on a sheet of paper so I know where to place my coasters. This template though looks like it keeps the coasters from moving. Since your laser looks like it's not moving anytime soon, you should make a template that outlines the edges so you can butt stuff up against the edges if you need to and be able to reuse your templates like this one.

Back to working with the ORTUR laser 2 after having back surgery. Question: In my Lightburn 1-12-1 ( I think, the latest) Circles get cut out in circles but squares get cut out only in X, back and forth!. If I select TRACE, it cuts out the inside and outside of the line, which is a waste. Takes Forever What did I miss? Next..After the latest download in Lightburn, the shift /FRAME option doesn't turn on the laser while framing. It IS on (Selected). I have to go to MOVE and turn on the fire button in order to see the laser. Any ideas?

Hi there! I have the laser ortur 20w as well and I cannot get it to engrave onto the aluminum business cards and the stainless steel blank stamping pendants. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I have engraved mirrors, wood, and tile with it. The mirrors I can only get to engrave at 20 mm/sec at 90% power and get shotty results and it took 8 hours to engrave some text onto a 12x12 tile mirror, If I put the speed higher it will engrave onto mirror but will have to do multiple passes to get it to appear through the mirror. If someone can help me it would be greatly appreciated. I have used lightburn and lasergrbl and still can’t get cards or pendants to engrave.

Love the videos Jim Thank you. I have a possible dumb question. Do you or someone else know if the "ambient light" around the laser will effect the burn in anyway? For instance if I burn one way in the led lit shop, vs taking unit outside on a sunny day . Kind of thing.

Can't say i've taken my laser outside. However I have an Ortur at work in an LED lit shop, and i have a FoxAlien Reizer at home (Ortur-class unit, but with some QOL improvements) I run lights on/lights off and have had zero issues with inconsistencies. I THINK the laser operates at a frequency so far and above what our light does that it just doesn't have any kind of impact on it.

I even jacked the power up to 85% and its not even leaving a mark on them. I noticed your laser module was way up off your coasters. My laser came with an acrylic focusing card to adjust my laser height from my material that I'm engraving. Am I supposed to just raise it up high like yours or what? I rather put the laser on a wooden plate, screw it in, cut the same plate it stands on with the max working surface, for example you cut a square of 400x400. Take the cut out and use it as a template of 400x400. You can make more 400x400 templates that will always fit perfectly in this cut-out work space. This way, every time you place a 400x400 template inside the laser, it will be positioned exactly on the absolute cords. No need for taping the paper and recutting the board every few times.

That's a grey area. If you design it, it could be considered fan art. But do your research before selling anything that might have to be licensed.
