Awesome experiment! However, when measuring power you need to record both the current and voltage at the same time (or same conditions if you only have one dmm). If the electrical load is too large (low resistance) the power supply can't keep up, and the voltage will drop.

Ah, nothing like a nice warm piece of Plutonium or Strontium roasting itself as it generates electricity. In fact, old pacemakers were powered by tiny little Plutonium RITEGs inside. www.orau.org/PTP/collection/Miscellaneous/pacemaker.htm To be honest, as long lasting power supply, a RITEG is a very useful device. Lots of them were built in Russia for off grid use. Most were Strontium-90 based. Only problem is the radiation.

Great vid, and I love what you do with your channel! :) Just a quick comment, the semiconductor used within the thermoelectrics are typically based off of n-type and p-type Bismuth Telluride (Bi2Te3), not silicon. This is because is has a much lager voltage generated in this temperature range (ZT~1 at room temp). The difference between the n and p types are as you correctly said for p has a higher amount of "holes". The n-type is likewise doped with a larger amount of free electrons for use as charge carries. The metal contacts do wire the thermocouples in series, but also actually a bending effect of the semiconductor Fermi bands that enhances the voltages generated and allows for this effect to take place (see below). Also I'm sure you probably know that a thermocouple (The thermometer) only measures a temperature differential relate to its voltage, and hence need a compensation "cold-side" reference found inside the multi-meter. Great work though! Thanks for uploading this +1 sub :) [EXTRA PHYSICS] The way it allows electron promotion into the conduction band of the semiconductor is through the heat energy needed/or rejected to facilitate the charge carriers moving from the different Fermi levels between the semiconductor, and the metal contact. This is why the module gets hot and cold at these junctions.

You choosed the wrong plates. Ampers are very low. You need to use TEG. TEC is for cooling. Not for generating good power. Thats why companies have built Tegmart and deviwatt with TEG modules. Not TEC. TEC is thermo electric cooler. But TEG is a thermo electric generator.

Thanks,

Unfortunately this is not an economical method of producing energy at the current cost of $2.00 per pad. (8 pads = 12V@150Ma) This means that it would cost $16,000 to generate 12V@150A-1800W and that is only at peak sunlight heat hours, like a solar water heater. You would have the cost of building a support system like the solar water heater (put them in a case with glass and paint them flat black) but also have a cooling method for the back side.

I have a question , since those tegs can either get hot or cold , could you double stack two together , one side produces your heat and your other one reverse to produce cold to generate your power with the best cooling option? I would really like to know as I want to try to build a generator myself to charge a battery system for off grid.

i think a good way to raise the efficiency would be to stack a few of those on top of each other. in fact there are stacks like this on ebay, but they are sold in single units which cost 5$+. i would play with those for hours and hours if i had a few of them but they are too expensive. i might have to stick to DIY design with aluminum and carbon rods from batteries

How does this compare to a sterling engine for efficiency?
@KeystoneScience
@KeystoneScience 7 жыл бұрын
+Eli Simmons much less efficient, a sterling engine is around 33% efficient, while these are probably about 6-15% efficient ( perhaps even less ), but then again, that number could be improved if you trapped all the heat so that it could only go through the module and sufficiently insulated the cool side .
