John, I just wanted to thank you for making this video. This was my first ever project and I wanted to thank you for showing how to do it using very basic tools. It was great fun and most of all has given me the confidence to try (slightly) more complicated projects.

I want to start a furnisher making class in January. I only have a circular saw and sanders that was my fathers. I also have a hand saw that I bought. That’s it I can’t afford expensive power tools, only hand tools for now. This video was very helpful in showing me what hand tools to buy and how to use them. Thanks!

John do you know we all had to make stools like that in woodwork class in school back in the 70s ( god I'm old) brings back memories. And I was just reading through the comments a I got one of those brain fart ideas how about a build of between yourself and tommy eire workshop hand tools v power tools it could be like terminator man vs machine. What do you think

Thank you, a simple little stool build I can modify to make stools for working on the dirt bikes, washing dogs, working under sink, etc. Great practice. Once I have 3 or 4, maybe I’ll start using them vs squatting and kneeling all the time. The old back and knees hate those two.

Yes, it IS perfect, that thing will outlast us!...Amazing what you did with some basic C16 studding timber. I'm making something similar this w/e from Oak. It's going to be a little coffee mug table, so will be a little flatter on the top. As much as I love the idea of hogging it all out by hand, I'll be using my lathe! ;)

Jon I made a three Leggate stall at my Bodgers group last year when I first went. It was the first thing they teacher to do. It is a piece of ash cut in half to make the top and then three legs out of Chessnut. This was done by a Frodo split log into four, then axed three of them saving one for spares just in case you cock up. And once you’ve semi rounded off with the axe you then take it to the shavers and you’re annoyed it you’re knifed it round to make a billet for the legs. Once used a hand or gap of 2 foot long for the free holes for the leg to pass through you then shave one end to make it go through the hole. Since I’ve done that I’ve let it dried and settle and then I’ve linseed it to give it a waterproof and lovely finish.. I’m trying to see if I can send a picture of it but I’m having a job to I have to get my daughter with site today. But another little great demo. But also you can use a round plane which they use for chair making they are pretty good.

Hi John, thanks for the video! I love this little stool. Your method of explaining things is so nice. I also like the hand-tool approach very much. Question on the wedge cuts on the legs: Do you make the wedge cut in the leg with or across the grain of the leg?
@JohnMcGrathManInShed
@JohnMcGrathManInShed 3 жыл бұрын
cross grain, although its not as important as the tenon is contained and not as likely to split, you can drill a hole where the saw cut stops in order to arrest any split that might continue when installing the wedge.

All I will say is go to ~2:00 of this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYWrfaN3aZdpbbM If it appeals to you, I *highly* recommend the entire ‘Alone in the Wilderness’ DVD as it’s mind-blowing what the man did. His making of the door to his cabin is worth the price of admission alone. That he started it in his mid-50’s merely adds to the wonder.
