I was looking for this video yesterday when I needed to add length to a nail that I mistakenly filed too short and wanted to match to my other nails . When adding the extension layering 2 pieces of silk one on top of the other and saturating with the gel makes it thicker and better result . I did have trouble with a corner curving in a little and the edge on one side felt as if the fiberglass material was frayed if that makes sense. Hopefully I will get a better result next time. All the best

Thank you so much for this video . A week away from my daughter's wedding & I tore a nail !!! Can I use this method if the nail is still partially attached ??
@MSLP5 жыл бұрын
yes - in cases where the nail is still partly attached I'd usually glue it into place prior to the silk wrap. Sometimes I don't even use a silk wrap if it's still attached or I have the tip - I have a couple other patching videos in my Tips & Tricks playlist showing other scenarios/techniques that you may want to check out

Colette two questions how long does this process last and can I get it done at my local nail salon?
@MSLP5 жыл бұрын
how long it lasts depends on a lot of things - exposure to water, exposure to polish remover, and other things. I think this one may have lasted the whole time it took to grow out the break, but sometimes it may need to be replaced. I've never been to a nail salon so I don't know if they do this exactly, although I'm sure they have options for extending a broken nail

Thanks so much for sharing . Ive been doing patches but have a nail this will be great for. I was wondering, have you ever considered trying the gel with a foil nail form at all? I hadn't until now, I've had a few people suggest it. It's rare that I do this type of an extension, I almost always manage to find the tip when I have a full break

I wish I had this information about 2 1/2 weeks ago. When my nails break I just end up cutting them ALL down. Then I am mad because my nails are short and stubby and I don't want to polish them...LOL!!! Now I have an idea of what I can do to fix the problem. Thank you!!! Once your nails begin to grow longer how does that affect the gel patch and at what point do you take the gel off the natural nail?
@MSLP7 жыл бұрын
With this method, it just grows out right with the natural nail, and for removal I soak it off with acetone either if I need to replace it, or if it's grown out enough I no longer need the patch
@beccageema7 жыл бұрын
Another great tutorial, Colette! You make it look easy. I like your videos because you are not only talented & patient, but you let us see your mishaps & struggles too. Keep'n it real! I did a nail extension like you did in this video & the tip broke right away (thumb nail). So next I glued on a tip (one that went further back on my nail bed rather than just at the tip). I had great success, my nail grew out great. The only thing I didn't like was the lightless gel seems to shrink in the middle & I lose my C-curve, giving me an odd flat nail. I've pinched & tried various methods with the ASP lightless gel, but always end up with an awkwardly looking flat nail. 🤔 My nails look a lot like yours, shape, C-curve, length, & occasional wonky downward side growth 🤣 I must be doing something wrong! I was drinking homemade bone broth all winter & my nails were long & strong! Now, ugh! I'm gluing & patching like crazy. I use Unt too, but I only get a day or so out of my manicure because I do water aerobics 3 times a week. My next adventure is IBD soak off builder gel. If that doesn't help, I guess I'll be chopping them off for summer. 😕😔
@MSLP7 жыл бұрын
that sucks it didn't last very long for you! This fix is going on about 2 weeks and still looking good, and the thumbnail is 3+ weeks and still looking good although I had to add a bit more gel to it.
@tinkerspell48507 жыл бұрын
I used to extend my nails a lot, and what I would do to help for the curve is to put the gel on, spray it and hold my hand upside down. Most of this stuff is self levelling - it's thick enough it's not going to drip off but it does help form a bit of a curve.

I've tried nail glue/resin patch repairs, but only on cracks, not full breaks. Never really worked great for me. And I've never tried the lightless gel- even though I remember when you first tried it a while back, and I was interested. But in the future, I think I'm going to try clear acrylic and dual forms if I ever break a nail and feel the need to lengthen it back up.

dethofariel same here. I tried it multiple times. It kept cracking. I took it back to sallys. Now I use 1 to 2 very thin coats of clear builder gel to ny nails to strengthen them. I haven't had any breaks in about 3 months whuch us world record for me.

@meeshnicolep7 жыл бұрын
This is a great way to do this. I hate breaking my nails! I have a few questions though... once this starts to grow out, does this change the stress point of the nail? Also how hard is this after it's set? My nails usually bend back, but sometimes they break off when they don't bend.
@MSLP7 жыл бұрын
by the stress point do you mean where the nail naturally wants to bend? Yes it can, depending on where you end the patch. That's the downside, but I try to just be mindful of it. The tip is really hard once it's all done - harder than a regular nail, and not really flexible at all. Even one layer of gel can keep nails from flexing naturally, which is why I only use it for repairs & not on all my nails

Colette, does this damage the natural nail? I bought a fibre glass version of your kit for my thumbs as my thumb nails don't grow but I'm a bit scared to try as nail tips, press ins and acrylics just damage my nail and cause big creases in my nail bed. I'm guessing though that because its such thin layers you can just do the tips and let the nail bed grow healthily?

I think as long as you remove it properly - soak off with acetone - there shouldn't be much if any damage. And yes, you can just do your tips and leave your nail bed bare

Hi, I´m using this products for maybe two years but in last few months I have problems with the gel. After appling 2-3 layers the surface allways cracks. Sometimes more sometimes less but allways. I tryed not wash my hands after doing my nails. I stopped use polish after doing may nails, I started doing this without artifical light so just in the room without any light - nothing helped. I started keep them very short, because I thought it is because the lenght. Nothing helped. I changed many types of nailpolish remover, I even started to use just clear aceton for cleaning my nails from nail polish - nothing helped. The cracks are allways there. I´m so upset, I do my nail, they are nice new and next day all cracked. Do you have any idea what could cause this problems?

I have really soft nails but I play guitar and I like my right hand nails to have a fair length. I put whole silk patched on all my right hand nails (which are now the length I want to keep them at) and I use sculpting gel over top. Sculpting gel is usually self leveling and give a pretty even surface, or at least one that's easy to level out with buffing. But even if you're using the lightless gel,. I agree with what some one said: Maybe if you use a form it will be much easier to get the patch or new end to hold its shape as it cures.

Maya Victoria I used to use this "gel" and researched the ingredients list before, and it is essentially concentrated resin (nail glue.) It even smells like really strong nail glue out of the bottle. As such, I suspect it wouldn't release well from the form, but it is worth a try. I had better success using a tip and applying the silk wrap over that to save me a few steps, but I've done MSLP technique when I'm out of tips before as well. It just doesn't last as long.

mapy1979 i know Colette takes biotine supplements to keep them strong but im not sure what else she does. She has a video on nail maintenance. You should look at it!
@SimderZ7 жыл бұрын
mapy1979 i dont think her nails are strong, she has a lot of breaks. Thats not a critisism its just how nails go. Mine are long but not strong, they grow fast. Lately since i used gel polish a couple of times my nails went to hell. They all broke at the smile line. Lots of patches, patches on patches.. Nails getting uglier and uglier i cut 4 of them off and other are cut down past the breaks. Not at all happy with my stumpy joes but hey-ho they will grow back and at least i dont have to worry about nails pinging off! I think what helps your nails best esp' if you use nail polish a lot and have longer nails is to keep the nail at the cuticle well hydrated. I use 100% cold pressed Jojoba oil which is inexpensive and has a long shelf life, its also the only oil with can penetrate and aid the nail. Its also great for skin and hair. Win win. This turned into a bit of an essay! Lol

That was very time consuming and a lot of work...how come you just didn't use a tip? I've had situations where one side/half would break off and I use whatever I have (paper towels, napkins, coffee filter, etc.). If the whole tip breaks off I glue the nail back on and then reinforce the free edge to the nail with a strip of whatever is handy and a few coats of glue. Once I broke 3/4 of my big toe nail off so I put a tip on and it grew out perfectly; better than the original; which had been ingrown. Sorry for rambling on...it's past my bedtime and I'm wide awake with nobody to talk to 😨

It doesn't usually take as long if I'm not narrating, plus I don't have any tips although maybe it would be good to have some on hand just in case

When I use these exact products... my gel coat after a while cracks. Why is that? Not enough time in between drying time?
@MSLP7 жыл бұрын
it could be that, it could be too thick of a layer, or it may be a bad bottle - I had one bottle that kept cracking and eventually got a fresh bottle and stopped having the problem

Thanks so much... will try that out. Broken nails suck sometimes. Lol Love your videos!!

Hi Collette I'm so happy to see you're still using the technique I showed you years ago on my japannailsandmore channel. 👍 I have a new channel since that one got hijacked by my abuser. So if you need to contact me please do so in this new channel. thank you. I hope you are well.

@MSLP7 жыл бұрын
well the first thing is to stop biting your nails. If you can't do it just by willpower some brands have products that will make your nails taste bitter so you don't want them in your mouth.

The material from disposable face masks are thin but stronger then silks. That's what I have found works.
@MSLP7 жыл бұрын
thanks for the tip! I've heard of using tea bag, but I be having a slightly thicker material helps
@Pinkoflove37 жыл бұрын
It's also stronger then tea bags.
