Күн бұрын

My daughter Sara is in 6th grade and for the last portion of her school year, like the rest of the world, we have been doing schooling from home. To make the best of it I've have been using this time period to incorporate “homeschool” lessons of our own to introduce her to classes she doesn’t otherwise get at school.
This build was one of those lessons; We blended together a Home Economics lesson with Shop Class and I helped her make a walnut Tortilla press and fresh flour tortillas. We wanted to be sure to share this one because it was build with a nice level of difficulty; some interesting elements, but nothing that wasn’t very very achievable in the end.
Enjoy! And please feel free to recreate this one at home.

@@yooogle no one said you couldn’t. But this adds to the father/daughter relationship. Allows for practical application as well (at school,”oh,you made a tortilla press”, but at home,”let’s make tortillas and eat them!” Too many kids grow up not interacting with their parents,fathers especially, so this video is great on so many levels.

@ericedwards5125

The hole is drilled to match the diameter of the bolt. Placement is by sight to set the bottom of the arm over the pressure strip on the top plate.

There are several mistakes done. First of all, this is press to make CORN tortillas and NOT flour tortillas. The handle is way too short and misaligned. There isn't a stopper on the back (next to the hinges) so the wood plate doesn't open flat

This is true. At some point we are hoping to link plans in the description of this video so that there’s a fool-proof template for it. Oddly enough for this we were bold enough to just go for it by feel on the walnut and it worked. A better way would probably have been to do a test cut on some separate scrap.

Okay so straight up here. The reason I love this video is because you answer the one question I always have when people make tortilla presses: How does the thing not squish the tortilla into oblivion. Adding the envelope to make a gap is brilliant and now I'm sitting here slapping myself in the head going "Why didn't you think to just add a spacer before the hinge?" Because I'm an idiot. That's why. But seriously, I love this video and I love the design and since I make wraps more than the 4" or 5" tortillas I bought a maker for I may take on making a press myself that's more appropriate for the size of tortillas I actually need. Great video!

Typically, a tortilla press is used for corn tortillas. Flour tortillas are normally made with a roller so they are thinner and inflate when cooked.

@MakersWorkshopLLC
@MakersWorkshopLLC 4 жыл бұрын
The thickness of the finished tortilla is all about how much you offset the hinge when you are installing it. We used a full envelope here and this is the thickness it gave us. Something thinner would achieve a thinner finished tortilla. Hope that helps!
